Really big house. Everything has already gone over budget, so no money left for my stuff. But of course they still want it.
5 TV locations, want the clean look so OK with the idea of cable boxes located in rack in basement. Most Baluns seem to have IR in and out.
Question is which balun will be trouble free when just using a typical cable box to the TV, and can I use the TV remote to control the cable box (through the balun)? They will likely want to use the smart TV features. I know when setting up a TV, if a cable box is there in the room, it detects it and you can control it from some TV brands remotes. Can this be done with remote located cable boxes through baluns?
It is always odd doing something that might be considered low tech, I always feel out of my element when NOT using some sort of control system.

I have a Vanco unit at my house that works well.  Gear in the basement, tv in the living room.  Vanco eve2006 I think...Mine is a few years old, so they probably have newer models that do 4k and all that jazz.

The only thing I don't particularly like is the shape of the IR Receiver...It's round and a little wonky...But works well.

Which cable system? Many of the slave boxes will fit behind a TV. Swapping out the cable boxes will be the cheapest path. Some of the cable boxes use RF remotes. I'm not suggesting that you attempt to use RF remotes to a distant rack, but you typically don't need IR relays for same room or next room location.

Check out the Wbox HDMI extenders at ADI.  They are priced REALLY well and have come with a IR eye that works just fine.  It is 1080p up to 130'.  I have to say, it has given me the least problems of any extender I have ever used.

Thanks.
I should have a look at what Cogeco cable is offering. Not the same boxes as Rogers cable. Might be a different solution if they have something that can be hidden behind the TV. I think they show Arris boxes on their website.

The evex2006 is a rock solid extender. We have sold a couple hundred of them, no failures yet.

I believe Cogeco's new boxes (their Tivo boxes) have RF remotes.
