I woke up to some emails from the neighborhood email group about a couple cars being stolen in the neighborhood and one person said their car was rummaged through.  I decided to check our cameras to see if it caught anything.  I could see at 2:40am a car rolled up out front of the house and turned the lights off.  I guy got out and ran via the side yard and up to my van.  Apparently I left it unlocked, which is something I never do. I am sick with a bad cold and ran out to get some meds yesterday and must have left it unlocked in my sickened daze.  They stole my cctv test monitor and took the tray from the center console.  It had gas receipts, an old ipod I don't use, some pens.  Nothing of any real value but I want the tray.  I am pissed and feel violated though.  Thieves are fvcking dumb though.  Its a work van with thousands of dollars of tools and parts and products in the back and they didn't go back there at all, thankfully.  Hell, my toolbag alone had 3 drills in it plus all my hand tools.

They don't want to work for it, they just want the light-weight stuff. OTOH, three bars have had their safe stolen, so....

My neighborhood has been seeing the same things happening and it's just target of opportunity stuff, although a few windows have been broken. Since that makes noise, it's obviously less common.

Having lost two cars, three car stereos, a box of tools and four bicycles to thieves and an attempted break-in where I rented before buying my house, I'm all too familiar with that level of pissed off. When the last bike was stolen, the idiot also took my dad's small snowblower and dragged it across the hood of his '56 T-Bird. I have zero tolerance for this kind of shit and if I catch someone, I may make the news. When the Police ask "Why is he hanging by his feet?", I'll just say "Because he would die if I hang him by his neck".

Or, I might just have the turd get on all fours and make him lick the stripe along the edge of a road while I kick him in the ass the whole way.

One of my camera/DVR customers called to ask me to look at the video from that morning and I saw a car pull up next to another that was parked across the street. They left the lights on, four guys got out and circled the car, which was parked directly under a street light. Seeing nothing of value and finding locked doors, they left but the homeowner across the street saw it happen. The car is owned by his daughter's friend and when I saw him, he asked why they would do that, even with the camera and ADT signs at his driveway. I told him they were sending a message- he asked what the message was and I told him it was "We don't care about your cameras and alarm".

I did a bar/restaurant a while back and during a break-in, one of the pinheads went behind the bar and as he filled a waste basket with bottles of booze, he would occasionally stare directly at the camera facing that part of the bar. He must have seen the rings of red LEDs and he may have talked to one of the customers who had told people that some of the cameras I installed were dummies. I let him believe that.

My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

Cameras can only do so much here.  It is very dark, no street lights, country type setting.  We are far enough back from the road that without lights you can't see anything pull up, with the headlights on, you can just tell its a car and not an suv, but that is it.  They were wearing hoodies and couldn't make much out other then it looks like they were white.  One guy we could tell was at least 6'3" based on how high he came up against the van window.  Other than that, can't make enough out for anything.  Still, the cops asked if I could send it to them.

I would be enraged to a new level if they dragged shit over the hood of my classic car.  That is such bs and disregard.  Thieves deserve to be shot dead.  I don't want to hear the stupid "they are down on their luck" or "the punishment doesn't fit the crime" bs.  DEAD.  If you are such a jackass that you steal from other people that work for their stuff, then you deserve to die, simple as that.

There was a rental house on our block that was always a pain the ass. We live in a nice neighborhood that is always quiet. Over time neighbors were missing mall and other small things, mostly annoyances. During Christmas we kept getting things stolen like electrical splitters connecting outside decorations.

After the 3rd one being stolen, I duct taped fish hooks so that when you grabbed the splitter you received a surprise. No more problems after the 4th attempt.

Another neighbor painted a 4X4 to match the asphalt, when the renters kid came flying around the corner, usually 50mph in a 25mhp residential zone, he lodged the board between his rim and front fairing.

All of us had enough of these idiots. Fortunately, they moved after we contacted the owner and said we've all had enough.

Problems went away completely when they moved.

I wish it was something as simple as that.  There have been reports of this all over town the past 6 months or so.  They typically come in from another town and hit a bunch of cars in a neighborhood.  Scumbags.  I wish I went out there to find a mauled thief, as there was a black bear in the neighborhood last night before these robberies.

So... then, I've just gotta ask a serious question: are you in favor of the death penalty for murder and perhaps some other crimes? It's my belief that a person who takes a life has shown by their actions that they believe it's all right to take a life so they should live under that theory and therefore forfeit their life if they kill someone.

Just wondering.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I think that anyone that murders someone should not only die, but it is up the family of the victim how, and if they choose to be executioner, then so be it, let them have at it.

Where would you draw the line on this? Shop lifting, pirating copy writed content, tax evasion or insurance fraud? I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't stolen something.

Because there are no repercussions.  The only good thief is a dead thief

Petty crime is (as of a few years ago) basically legal in California. If they get caught they are issued a ticket and sent on their way.

As a result, nuisance thefts are off the charts. Car stereos, bikes, yard tools etc. Leave it outside and it will be gone. My neighborhood (quiet and semi rural) never had problems with it, now it seems like every couple of days I hear of one of my neighbors getting stuff stolen out of their car or yard. Cops can't/won't really do anything about it.

Then again, even more serious burglaries don't garner much of a response. One of my clients had their home broken into while they were home asleep. Theives threw a cinder block through their downstairs window, entered and stole a purse, 2 laptops, a small tv and X-box and 2 ipads.
I provided shockingly clear video footage of the burglars for the detectives. While they were looking at the video and copying it to a thumb drive I asked what the odds were of catching them. Was told that it was "slim to none" unless they were well known criminals. Basically no investigative work would be done and that was that.
And no, they were never caught.
I am a trained professional..... Do not attempt this stunt at home.

With how many people I see so proud of their hacked firesticks, it's hard to believe those aren't legal. I sometimes feel like I'm the only one without one.

Those bodies would stack up very, very fast.

Fry em.  I buy my music.  I use Netflix and Vudu for movies and TV shows I stream.  I buy Bluray discs of movies I like enough to keep.

You know in some countries, convicted thieves have their hand cutoff if the theft is severe.

And you know what, they don't have a huge problem with thieves. Just saying.

Yup.  Eye for an Eye typically works well.  Slap on the wrist and let people walk doesn't do anything.
