This is how many of my first jobs were prewired. No, I didn't wire them, just sold speakers and systems to the home owners.
Pry the box off the joist, use an 8" speakers and the radius will cover the hole. You could go old-school and just mount some Bose speakers to the cover plate. They make a nifty adapter bracket for those situations.
