How can i stop Sony smart TVs popping up the update overlay on when they start up eg. the popup that says something like "there is an update pending please click here to start".

This is for Sony TVs from the last few years say 2015-18

You can either disable auto updates or better yet, go pro mode.

Will that disable the volume indicator bar?

Display, Mute, vol+, home. Wait for restart then notice new menu option for pro mode. Select this, give it a second- then select start pro mode. TV will restart and you WILL NOT have access to other menu functions- so set audio and control preferences prior to doing this. I’m 95% sure it will not effect the volume OSD.

Disable wifi and disconnect LAN. That is assuming your using the TV as a monitor only. Should never use smart hub on any TV anyway. Use a ROKU or AppleTV. Update TV when you install it then disable internet access

That doesn’t work too well if you want to control the tv with IP control

In addition to that, with HDR needing constant updates right now, you may rob the system of functionality. Example: Sony had an update not long ago to enable Dolby Vision on many TVsSo the age old argument about blocking the TV off to be a monitor only (one of which I am a strong supporter of) can not always be followed right now.

It sure does when you set a policy on the router to block it from the WAN.

Brilliant. Might be a pain with firmware updates though.

How do you do that?

You create a firewall rule to block outgoing / incoming traffic from / to the IP/MAC address of the TV. This would still allow for local network access from your control system but block communications to the Sony update server. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways. You could block the update server ports, the update server(s) IP address(s) or more easily, a blanket rule to block all outgoing / incoming traffic from/to the specified device.

Depending on your firewall, you may be able to set a schedule for the rule so that the traffic is allowed out/in late at night if the TV can update while in standby.

Right this is going to be router dependent.

In pakedge you can with parental control rules. In pakedge fortinet types it would be firewall rules. In microtik something like /ip firewall filter add chain=forward src-mac-address=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX dst-address=!X.X.X.X/XX action=reject
