We have used the Ring Pro and the floodlight cams on smaller projects that don't require an 8 or 16 channel nvr. Both work great but they require bullet proof WIFI. They install fairly easy so I can't imagine they would be "labor sucking" or whatever. I wouldn't try to integrate them with other tech like a control system and most whole home customers prefer not to have a monthly service.

The labor sucks big is when they don’t work and you have to go fix it. Exactly why we started putting in that clause.

I will say on my Ring doorbell I've noticed it's fairly easy to lose chunks of recorded video. For instance I had a courier pick up something from my open carport. When he arrived, he paused to look at his phone. The camera stopped the clip there, and then did not pick up the remainder of the event, which was fairly substantial as it involved him loading a 65" TV into his vehicle. It's a cheap service, but no option for 24 hr recording makes a difference I think.

This is a nice breakdown of the different DIY cameras for those that give a rats ass!

You probably want to check on Nest outdoor cams too, they're hired-wired and can record continuously. I found its details here that might be worth checking. There are also other options in there that you can explore. One thing you need to know about nest though is that it will "almost always" lead you to getting a subscription for storage.

Ring doesn't offer continual recording. It is motion-based and doesn't pick up everything. If you want something that will be closer to the functionality of a camera system, I'd look at Nest if a standard NVR/cameras won't fly.

For what it's worth - I've personally been disappointed with the Ring because of the app load time when someone is at the door. By the time I pull out my phone, unlock it, open the app and finally get video - more often than not the person has decided I'm not home and walked away. I'm glad I put it in my own home first because I would not want to be dealing with a customer that had the experience I've had with it.

And this is the key bit of info to communicate to a client considering such a system before getting involved with it.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

seewolf,
were you able to return the one you installed in your house? Did you try? I found their customer service very helpful except for the fact that they didn't want to tell me any more than the most basic information, meaning I could hardly be creative with it except to start a research project.

On the other hand, when the Heath/Zenith doorbell extensions that I got to work with the Nest Camera/Doorbell combo did not work, Home Depot took them back even though the package was open.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Sorry for the delayed response - I just noticed the question.

I didn't try to return the Ring - I've had it for a while and am beyond any reasonable return period. At this point I'm thinking about trying out a DoorBird system and tying it into a control system - I like the idea of it always being live and accessible.

The Ring was a worthwhile experiment - but just didn't do it for me. It may be that my older phone is slowing down but it's still irritating to have the system in place and not feel like you can really use it. They did add a live access option but it times out so if you keep the video feed up because you are expecting someone, you have to keep refreshing it. Lesson learned, I'm just glad I never installed one for a paying customer.

HikVision has the value express series. Its cheap AF. If they wont spring for that we just tell them to get whatever they want and we will put it in T&M.
