That’s what is says in their email today. Coming this year it says and sounds more reliable coming from Sonos than it does from Apple itself. Surprised Apple would even allow this on Sonos. I think this means game over for all other players including Apple

Agreed. Considering Sonos is the only streaming product that Apple allows to access Apple Music, which people are moving to in droves. Now with this announcement I think we all know what’s next for Sonos......the Apple home pod is an incredible failure....Apple is one of the few companies that can afford to buy Sonos. It’s only a matter of time.

This being said, it’s strange it only works on the Sonos ONE, playbase and play5. Why the playbar is Omited is weird, unless a redesign is in the near future. Also the play3 is being discontinued

You mean the 'Apple users' that are completely in the Apple ecosphere are moving to in droves.

I sure ain't moving to Apple Music, I tried it last year and it sucked - maybe they made 'major' improvements since then?
And none of my non-Apple customers are moving to it that I have seen.
In addition, not all of my Apple customers are using it either.

I haven't had cable for years.  I "airplay" a lot from my phone to my TV.  This is not going to end well.  In the last 6 months to a year  airplay doesn't work very well.

My question is this...

1. If you can play music from your phone/tablet directly to Sonos
2. Link your iTunes account directly to Sonos.
3. Stream Apple Music directly from Sonos.

Then what exactly is the point of Airplay?

Sounds like you'd be jumping on a horse to go to the store, when you have a better faster vehicle to get you there.

Airplay is still a player because it's easy to use... sure Apple have made it harder and harder over the years by 'streamlining their products'*, but people still understand the process.
Punters 'get' Bluetooth, Airplay and GoogleCast - opening another app to stream something is in the too hard basket, even if it's super simple and intuitive...
So it's here to stay for the immediate future from what I can tell.

I'd be annoyed if I was a Denon / Apple / B&O customer who has been waiting for the Airplay 2 rollout though, they were promising it last year!

*it's their way of making things more convoluted
This industry is not getting cheaper and cheaper, we're simply convincing ourselves that we have to push the cheapest option to customers.

Older Sonos speakers can work with AP2, but there’s a “but”.

“The report says that Sonos customers with older equipment are not completely left out of the AirPlay 2 scene, but at least some new hardware will be required.

The catch is that any Sonos speaker that is grouped with a Sonos One, Play:5 or Playbase will be able to act as a single AirPlay 2 audio source. Obviously, this comes with tradeoffs as those speakers will no longer be able to play independent audio tracks.”
