I'm looking into Ring and I see scads of complaints about the delay. Nobody seems to have any concept of how long the delay is; the best I see is "the video starts with the UPS guy walking away." Obviously that's unacceptable, but do you know how long it generally is, or does it vary? Is there a solution to it?

The Cloud subscription itself might be enough for me not to use it, since it turns a hundred dollar product into a three hundred dollar product in a few years without improving it one bit!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Don't know if intangibles like network integrity, isp upload speed are considered in the things you've read...

Id be keen to know about this too, ive got to spec a Ring system and was worried about connectivity as most of their products are wireless data rather than cabled.

Their Elite keypad apparently uses POE for power and data so will be looking to use that.

I did think as Fred mentioned that some of the issues may be caused by poor consumer wifi coverage. eg. ISP router and repeaters (or just ISP router).

1. If you are using a wifi model make sure it has excellent signal.
2. Make sure your upload speeds are at minimum 5 megabits up.
3. The Elite is ethernet and POE so that solves the issues I have seen from 1.
4. Set the motion to trigger on the more sensitive side which will ensure you capture the event better.

We use skybell. The issue I have is that by the time you get the notification on your phone and open it the activity is over. Or the person pushing the button has left. Works great if they know to hang around for a few seconds.

An IT doorbell, the latest technology, to be reliable must have a hastily scribbled note scotch-taped to it saying "Please press the button, then wait thirty seconds."

Technology. Nice. Ooh, I want one of those!

Just had a buddy who had his $60k custom off-road truck stolen from his driveway. He mentioned having a camera on it so I was hopeful they might have something they could use to track it down... nope.

Dude had installed a doorbell cam 10 ft above ground level, upside down, underneath the roof eace and was surprised when the thing didn’t kick on in time. It’s actually almost comical. It kicks on just as the truck is ending its reverse on the driveway and all you see is him literally spinning tires down the street (the night cam actually wasn’t good enough to pick up much other than the headlights but you can def hear them spinning).

When I had ring at my own house, it would take about 13-15 seconds to connect.
Bigger problem for me is they are unreliable . Many failures and constant issues with dropping connection, etc.

I switched to the Nest Hello and it connects in about 3 seconds . Motion and video analytics are way better too.

As a Wi-Fi device, they are subject to the issues we always face with Wi-Fi devices. That being said, mine stays connected to my Wi-Fi without trouble. I have Ruckus right now. The delay is between the time you receive a notification, tap to open the app, and wait for it to connect.

However, if you want me to help you, you need to provide more information. Do you want to set this up as a recording device, that records everything that goes on at the front door? If that is the case then you need to install an NVR system with cameras, where the hard drive is spinning all the time. That is my opinion. You will not video the guy that has made off with your Amazon box in a 5 second grab n go. I believe the Ring and others like us are for casual conversations at the front door.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Ignore Ring, sell the Nest Hello

same price as a Ring Pro and it's a MUCH better product.

Ring spent their money defending against ADT lawsuits and hiring Shaq to sell their stuff, Nest spent their money building a superior product.

Well the camera does look a little better in the Nest than the Ring. Even thou it is doing so by applying a large amount of WDR/BLC DSP. Which makes it look very washed out and reduces the functional resolution. But overall, starting with the higher MP and better aspect ratio (for a front door), it still looks better at catching details than the Ring (or Doorbird), depending on lighting.

However... $300 a year for just 30days of events/recordings. WOW! Expensive! Costs you more every year than the cost of the system. And you HAVE to at least get the $50 a year to have even basic functionality of the system -
[edit]: After watching a couple of videos about it now, it does appear you at least retain basic functionality with no paid service.

Doesn't appear to be a way to getting the stream to an NVR? Correct? Also no 3rd party integration yet? Other than google home?
It is nice that it records 24/7 so you don't miss any events. And is stamped with button pushes and motion events in the cloud.

Yeah, I love Nest's interface, but they fees are really high. Kudos to them for making it work.

Anyone tried the facial recognition feature on the Nest doorbell - good, bad, just ok?

I never have problems with my Ring Doorbell being late on video, but it has really good wifi reception.

I've had a Ring Pro since last black Friday. The installation was not exactly smooth - the thing took 3 days to first power up (what could possibly take 3 days? But look it up, some people report 12-36 hours bootup, although not freaking 72)... I ended up having to replace my doorbell power transformer, and I had trouble getting reliable WiFi through the thick stone exterior wall until I forced it onto the 2.4GHz network.

But now? It's great! No problems whatsoever.

Regarding delay... do you mean delay at the beginning of recorded files? Or delay in answering on your phone (and seeing the person)? For the latter, about the quick as I can get from the person pushing the bell to seeing video on my iPhone is 7-12 seconds, and most of that is spent unlocking the phone and waiting for the Ring software to start up (goes faster if it's running). The alerts are instantaneous.

For the former, I think that all depends on how well you've got the device configured (motion zones, sensitivity) and how good your WiFi is. I have motion alerts configured, and I never miss the beginning of doorbell events. Most motion-only events (ones that don't trigger the doorbell - like UPS dropping and running) begin 3 seconds before the motion first appears.

I think the camera quality is fine, but the BITRATE of the encoded files is really just too low for great video.

This is why I want to be able to have a recorded message play when the button is pushed.
