And Brent, you have all of this information compiled in a document, so we know under which conditions to use which magic device??

I expect this was meant to be humorous, but the whole topic is now so deadly to our ability to even do business that it's hard to laugh.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Im suprised there has not been a class action suit. Im sure there are 10s of millions of consumers we dont deal with that have HDMI issues all the time.

The overwhelming majority of customers, have all their equipment connected with short HDMI cables. Usually the default 2m or 6ft ones. And most components are connected directly to the TV, with either no audio system or a simple sound bar.
This helps alleviate a lot of the problems we face doing better & more complex systems.

Yes it is. Sadly we (I) have to be very careful calling any Mfgr. out that is having an issue (even if it is proven). Our
Lawyers are adamant about this.

This post I'm having issues with a .07 meter hdmi cable direct to the Sony!!
I have another client with a 4K Apple TV that we had to go out four times to play with adjustments. So far I haven't had a call yet.
I have a few jobs with baluns and avr's coming up. I'm pretty nervous about what we'll encounter with either Roku or Apple TV's. Not looking forward to them. The finish used to be the fun part, now it's troubleshooting right out of the gate OR everything works fine.............for a two or three weeks and then the issues pop up. When you're in the middle of another job.

Yeah, honestly I'm at the point where I'm telling every client that the streaming video devices are necessary but they are a major pain and they should expect issues, reboots, and having to enter passwords often. It just comes with the territory...Like your cell phone but controlled with a remote. Helps sell IP remote management though.

I'm glad we don't have such restraints. It's my JOB to tell people which manufactures products are garbage.

And in a person to person call I can do same.
It is the printing and posting of this information that will cause me problems.

This is the most damaging part of HDMI - to reputation and the wallet. The fact that it works fine while you're there, then later random crap shows up.

Perhaps Brent you can explain this?? I guess there are just so many variables "riding on the edge". I've always thought of electronics as either "on" or "off", and for the most part programming is "if" "then", so shouldn't it primarily be either it works or it doesn't?

Sadly, as an enforceable standard HDMI falls very short, since everyone is allowed to do pretty much as they please (as long as there is an HDMI terminal in the line) there will continue to be a lot of failures.

Of course there are some things that you can do to minimize the frustration.
#1: Get to know your Factory Reps & Techs (if they know you they may be more forthcoming with honest answers).

#2: Try when possible to use repeatable solutions (not a perfect answer, but a somewhat reliable one).

#3: When in doubt, call me (I can be much more detailed on the phone than I can in print).

#4: Plan for the Future NOW!

#5: This is a hard one. Expect failure (sorry) and the need for adding some repair devices to make system work. In other words do not make quote without some buffer to allow the install of fixit devices.

#6: Keep the phone numbers handy for the following people. They know their stuff.

#7: Print out this thread, or at least the last post and maybe this one, and carry it with you. When you have to tell a client that you must fiddle with things that worked yesterday, and perhaps do so for hours, you can show them that this is not just their problem, it is also our headache and heartache. The only solution is to do all of numbers 1 - 6 and hope that you can solve their problem.

I lost a client once, an oncologist, because the things that had worked before to make his HDMI situation work did not work in this case. He didn't think it fair to be charged for the labor that didn't result in success. I didn't have the balls to challenge him, as a doctor, to see if he refunded charges for cancer treatments that had worked for other people but didn't work for this or that individual patient.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Oh, no worries.
I get a lot requests to post info that we learn about different products, this would be a great idea in a less litigious world. Sadly there are way too many lawyers.
