Justifiable reason for sure. At the distances the avg speaker is from a traditional whole house amp there is significant losses even with 14 awg. I pulled up some charts about a year ago and was blown away with how much loss you can have over a 75 ft run. Makes me consider spec’ing 12 awg in a lot of situations.

I know someone who did TEF analysis on various gauges when Munster started selling their stuff with the "Your wire is too thin" mantra and he found that at 50', 16 gauge is fine, under load, with a good amplifier driving it. He did mostly live sound at the time, so 50' was about as short a run as he would have had, but in the '80s, not many homes were being wired as extensively as they eventually would.

Do you still have the charts?

Google is your friend. I googled "speaker wire performance chart" and here's one of the thousand or so charts I got.



This looks like it has some pretty important information until you look at the last data point on the chart. It tells us that a signal will be reduced by only 1.3 dB after going through a hundred feet of sixteen gauge wire (we have to assume they're smart enough to run that signal through two hundred feet of wire, that is, a hundred feet out and a hundred feet back. That's pretty good but all the wires tested perform better.

Also note that the article states these figures are for eight ohm speakers. Insertion loss would be greater for four ohm speakers.
