I'm looking to build a VERY basic projector system for a nice elderly man who wants to use only his DirecTV remote if possible.

Projector audio/headphone out will feed an amp that will power a pair of in-ceiling speakers. DirecTV receiver will be the only source.

What projector brands can be controlled with codesets that are available from a DirecTV remote? Need only power and volume.

I know I can accomplish this with a control system - and he knows that we might resort to a programmed remote - but I told him I'd search first. I also know that I'll need to match sizing/distance - I'll start my search first with brands that can be successfully controlled with a DirecTV remote.

It's been quite a while since I did any remote control programming at this level, but back then, the codesets for TVs were not the same as the codesets for projectors. That is, I don't expect the DirecTV remote to have projector codes in it. RC Member edmund would have better information on that, if it is to be had.

If you decide to go explore in the DirecTV remote, there are two processes for assigning a codeset to a DirecTV remote. Whoops -- this only works with the older remotes, not the Genie type remotes.

The approach you'll want to use for this process lets you choose a brand, then it displays as many five digit codeset numbers as it has. The other way lets you choose a brand, then asks you for the model number. This method would be really cumbersome because you would not know if you're trying the same codeset over and over.

This is edited from what edmund wrote about this process:

The White Directv remotes have always had a remote signature included with all commands. Until the x-series of remotes, that signature was the same for all models of white Directv remotes. Now the different signature coming out of the x-series of remote tells the HR24 (and other) receivers what menu to display.

The setup you want is this:
1. move the slide switch to directv device
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT, wait for two blinks
3. enter 9 6 3
4. press CH DOWN

Now you'll get the setup method that shows five digit codeset numbers.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

If it's just that he really wants the DTv remote, do you know if the remotes can do Xantech RC68+ commands?

You could use them to control this:

The remote control programming has two sets of IR codes for Xantech. They can be found under AV1 and AV2 (that is, it's the same two code sets for each of those) and their numbers are 32658 and 32659.

Set your DirecTV remote to those two codes and see if it operates anything. If this yields nothing and you are DEAD SERIOUS, then avail yourself of the software found in the Original Pronto section of this site and analyze the codes.

Then contact Xantech with the information gleaned from that software. They may be able to put you on the track of a Xantech device that can be controlled by the codes in the DirecTV remote.

A phone call to DirecTV Tier 2 technical support and/or an email to remotecentral member edmund might also give you the answers you need.

Thanks for the Xantech option. If there's no direct control from the DirecTV remote I'm gonna go with a programmed remote.

These guys will sell you a box that will take any IR code and convert it to any RS-232 code.

very handy if you want to take lets say a... Pioneer Receiver IR Power on code and change it to Epson Projector On RS-232 code.. Or a Yamaha Receiver volume up code to a BenQ Volume up RS-233 code....
