I don't know why I hadn't seen this until yesterday, but two of my clients have a new crappy graphics setup on their DVRs. A search tells me this started back in November. I can't imagine how I had not seen it until now. My DVR has not changed, nor has a window come up offering for me to change to the new graphics. See [Link: directv.pissedconsumer.com]. Also see "New-Directv-GUI-ATTROCIOUS-DISASTER-Are-you-kidding-me" at [Link: forums.att.com].

The first guy complaining says he's switching to cable over this. I can see that. The second page is a response from someone at ATT saying he's calling it a solved problem because it's being worked on. Apparently this company mouthpiece has never experienced having a doctor try to remove a metal splinter from his eye. If he had, he would KNOW that "being worked on" NEVER deserves being called "solved."

Have you guys had to cope with this? Is there an actual solution? There was a DirecTV installer on site with me yesterday and he was not sure, but he thought forcing a software update was the solution. That might, however, just make things worse. Since he wasn't sure, I wasn't about to experiment.

Is there a way to request a software undate, where you revert to earlier versions?

It's been stupidly slow for a while.  I have Dish and prefer it over DTV.  I have had so many issues with their equipment on jobs, and never really cared for their menu structure.  Just my personal preference.  Dish, however, has almost no market share here.  I cannot remember the last time I came across it on a job.  I would sell it if they would just contact me back regarding signing up.

I the AT&T Forums are getting insults daily because of this change. Someone thinks the answer is opera glasses.

I thought DirecTV was so stupid that if they tried to shoot themselves in the foot, they'd miss. Well, they shot themselves in the foot and they didn't miss!

I photographed several panels of the old guide and menu just now, since mine hasn't switched over yet. This is just to compare when, eventually, I get screwed over too.

I suppose people will fume and fuss for a couple of weeks, six people will cancel their subscriptions, and then the rest of us will stay pissed off at AT&T but continue to use DirecTV. After all, here's an effect that always happens:

This reply is number two thousand and something in the last two days. DirecTV has just turned to crap.

New Directv GUI - ATROCIOUS DISASTER! - Are you kidding me?

For those of you who are new to this thread go ahead and post away but news flash DirectTV may say it's fixed..clearly it's not! Or that they're fixing it..clearly they aren't! Given the length of time since the changes took place they have no plans to change anything. Looks like the only solution is live with it or find an alternative and dump them. The later is my plan. I look forward to the day when I'm ready to execute it. In the meantime best wishes in your frustration till you decide what you want to do.

Here's a post from an hour ago, purportedly from someone working for AT&T:

New Directv GUI - ATROCIOUS DISASTER! - Are you kidding me?

Hello Everyone,

I appreciate the continued feedback. Some of you have been providing screenshots and detailed bullet point information that has been very helpful. I am continuing to capture all of your feedback and getting it to the developers and engineers. I wanted to take a moment to share what I have captured to make sure I haven't missed anything. If there are any issues that aren't included in this list, please let me know so I can get them added.

A couple of notes to keep in mind. First, this is only a summary of concerns. I have gone through all 2300+ responses and categorized them in the list below. The detailed information you have been providing is included when I send this to our teams to be addressed though. Second, some of the concerns below will be prioritized higher than others. As an example, things like Font, Lag, and Recording Issues are definitely a primary focus. I will keep you updated as I learn more about releases, updates, and improvements.

Picture Resolution Not Saving After Update Channel Icons Too Small Design Issues – Tile format, Complicated Navigation, Tile’s Too Large, More Button Presses for the Same Tasks Missing Features – Date Not Showing, Colored Buttons Removed, Caller ID Playback Bar – Too Large and Too Dark Info Bar - Too Large and Too Dark Playlist Menu – Delete Options Missing and Series Setup Issues Recording Options – Can’t Tell What is Being Recorded and Recording on Wrong Channels Search Function Issues Overall Lag of UI Font – Blurry Text, Text Color Contrast, Text Size too Small

Please continue to send your feedback. We are reading every post, even the ones about ADA, BBB, and AARP concerns.

Thank you,
Tim, AT&T Community Strategy

The ADA, BBB and AARP concerns have to do with a bunch of these people threatening to sue regarding age discrimination, as reducing the size of the fonts, especially as much as they have, is de facto age discrimination, as a major component of the complaints is the size of the new font. Why age discrimination? Because, as a group, older people typically have worse eyesight than younger people.

Another person writes:
As the old adage goes, "you can't polish a t@rd". changing fonts and colors is nowhere near what needs to be done.

The old guide needs to go back in place, and your team needs to start from scratch, using user suggestions, not management directives.
Since the bigger picture is redesigning more for the sake of data-mining and increased nag space for pay sales, I'm not very optimistic. It's ATT, folks.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I like the refresh. The font is bigger. 232 control has been snappy since the change

I have only seen screenshots of the new interface. At first glance it doesn't look bad but I guess I would have to actually use it to see what all the fuss is about. I never really cared for DirecTV's GUI. I always like Dish and that's what I had until I finally dumped TV all together. I can't imagine ever going back to paying for a TV subscription at this point. Netflix, Amazon, Showtime, and iTunes have everything I want and for far less money. Picture quality from all of those services is also significantly better than cable/satellite.

I think someone posted on this a kid 8n November or December. For some reason DTV is very slow to roll out firmware. I thought it looks like they are trying to copy Dish, but doing a very bad job with it.

It is horrible. And the new Tivo UI is also horrible. I use Hulu Live now, and it is also horrible. Sling is horrible. Dish is horrible IMHO as well, although less so than the "new and improved" DTV UI, and the Tivo "Hydra" UI.

At least on my Tivo I can opt out, or rever if I choose to try the crappy new UI. :P
