Got a cracked glass on a 75 inch XBR. Anyone ever been able to repair one of these?

Sony is no help they don't even have a panel, I'd love to be able to fix this and use this for myself.

Anyone have any ideas on what to do with this thing. Besides selling it for parts?

It's heartbreaking... But I second Impaqt's statement.
I'm Not an engineer, but I play one on TV.
My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

As you have already discovered, panels are not available. The reason is, the panel is the majority of the cost of the TV and to pay for a replacement is not worth the money. For just a little more, you can get a newer TV with warranty.

What you CAN do is find another 75X850E that has bad boards but the screen is good. Then swap all the guts over to the TV with the good panel. The only problem is finding one for sale (at a cheap enough price), it could take awhile. And you also run the risk of getting one that was suppose to have a good panel but then find it wasn't.

It's not going to happen. I have been repairing TVs since 1977. I think there were only 2 lcd panels that were cheap enough to justify purchasing for an out of warranty set. They were LGs, and that was 2-3 years ago. Even if Sony carried the panel, it would likely cost >$2K. I wish I had better news, but you might be able to sell circuit boards on Ebay as Impaqt suggested. You might score a few hundred $. The panel itself is not repairable.

Junk it. Take all of the boards out, and LED's. Sell them on Ebay.

Sony doesn't manufacture the Panels. They are sourced and sony only buys them from their vendor for warranty repairs. Even if the panel was available, you would have to apply for approval to order the part.

Check with the local warranty servicer. Stay in touch.

I recycled a 75” Samsung with a bad screen, and a week later was chatting with the local service guy. He said they had a panel that had come out of another set that had a few more bad pixels than the spec allowed.

Sadly I am in the same boat. I ordered a 75" 940d from MRI and did not pick it up from their warehouse right away because the house was under construction. When I did pick it up and installed it the internal screen was shattered although the was no visible damage to tv or box. Both Sony and MRI said not our problem so I ate it and it now sits in my garage as an expensive reminder not to do business with MRI.

edit I did call local repair center they told me a new screen when it comes off back order would run me about $4k so not really a viable solution
One thing I have learned in this industry. It is easier to pull a wire than it is to push one.

Ask them about a screen replaced for a bad pixel or three. At least it would be a good garage TV.

Yes, he can.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
