I have last years model of that (I bought used for $1200). It is awesome. With the PCI solid state drive, the boot up time to the login screen is only 2-3 seconds. After I type the password, time to desktop is only 2-3 more seconds and it's ready to go. And it doesn't get bogged down with anything I throw at it. Screen looks very good as well - very bright too.
I have used gaming laptops for work for a long time now. They work very well at editing graphics and the small rendering we run into with this industry.
And you can always find a good deal on last years models, from gamers wanting to upgrade to the latest.

I’ve been buying lower end or last year’s gaming systems for years. While the machines are more expensive to purchase, they are viable longer and increase my efficiency dramatically. Overall, this strategy has been cheaper over the long haul.

The above machine should work fine. One point to consider for any of the higher performance systems is shorter battery run time. This is not important for me.

I wish my Dell had a larger SSD. Need to move some stuff off toe a portable dive that I don't use all the often, since I seem to be filling it up with a variety of crap...

Thinking of getting one of these to store my URC program and files: [Link: amazon.com]

Regardless, having the SSD is a game changer. Boot up, or shut down, IS fast...

Nice machine. The only con i see is the display not being touch or higher resolution. If you don't care about that then i would pull the trigger.

For that price I’d look at the Lenovo P series

I just ordered a hp envy 15t. It’s the i7 with a 512 ssd and touchscreen. Went with 8gb ram. Win 10 pro. It was just tad over a grand, they have a 17” as well.

Here is a link, [Link: store.hp.com]

They are having a sale now that’s like 30% off

I use Drop Box to store the program files on my Del work laptop(with SSD!)
I can pull up the same program on my home desk top and save it to the hard drive just in case!

Any changes I make are updated on either PC.
Pretty painless!

I wouldn't expect the battery to last very long. Big screen though. I never needed such a large screen for programming.

Look at the Lenovo Thinkpad T470. All the i/o you need and epic battery life.

FYI:
Yes, the battery life is shorter than on other laptops. But I still get a good 2 hours out of a full charge (it's a large battery).
You can adjust the setting on the laptop to use less processing power, lower power settings on PCI buss, lower screen brightness, etc. All this can translate into almost 3 hours of battery time (depending on tasks).

iform,
I find having the large screen an absolute plus. I can have multi windows open while programming, to search for codes, copy/paste, and other tasks.

Mac,
The screen is a full 1920x1080. Why would you need (or be able to use) a higher resolution than that on a laptop screen?

[edit]: I bought this last year to upgrade my travel capacity.

I keep several different length network cables, rs232 cables, rs232 adapters, extra power brick, extra battery, mouse, surface pad, note pads, pens, markers, switch, small WAP, small router (Tik), and other odds and ends. It all fits easy. And with the backpack form factor, I can put it on and still have both hands free to carry more stuff.
