I can work the conductors for RJ45’s, all day long with no pain because I can straighten them all at the same time. But lacing the individual conductors into punch downs will literally make your thumbs bleed if you do them long enough.

So I guess my final ? would be a source/manufacturer for reasonably priced rj45 pass through panels.

I'd ask myself one question before asking that one.

Do you know so much about all the properties, advantages, and disadvantages of the different ways of interconnecting CAT cable that you can say you are wisely and knowledgeably choosing NOT to wire this panel according to the way thousands of rack panels are wired every day?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

It's my rack so I can make a decision as to if I'm willing to buck convention without the risk of disappointing a customer.

I'd prefer that myself. I can more quickly and more accurately do rj45's than punches (maybe because I've just made more patch cables than done punches).

Nobody has yet mentioned the kind of wire we're talking about. I can see your point with regard to CAT5E. Do you find things are the same with CAT6?

That and I had a defective cat5 run when I restrung the bar and I had to pluck that bastard out of a terminated and trimmed punch panel to replace it.

You had ONE defective CAT5. You're not saying something like "every once in a while I have a defective CAT5 run." In other words, this very very, even extremely, rare. Modifying your usual practices from what the industry does, because of one faulty wire, doesn't make sense.

If you had wired with RJ45s, you would have had all the irritations and problems of plucking that bastard out of the bunch of trimmed and beautiful cables... and then the one step of redoing the connection would have been a bit easier. It still would have been a complete pain in the ass and worthy of complaint. (I once wired a store speaker demo facility using Belden 16-2 SPT-2 run under the floor from the switcher to the speaker wall, and one conductor was missing from about a hundred feet of wire. I had to pull the entire harness out and redo it. I'm still irritated about it. It's now more than forty years later and I haven't run across a missing conductor in ANY other wire I've run into since then.)
