Have a client who wants some security cameras. Old analog wiring is there in 3 locations, its a bundled coax with two small gauge wires for DC power. Never done analog.

Anyways he just wants to view the cameras from his iPhone. He doesn't want to spend a fortune.

Looking for two outdoor domes and 1 indoor dome along with a DVR.

So considering everyone from snap luma, hikvision, axis, flir, honeywell, icrealtime, digital watchdog.... who's affordable with a good app that is user friendly and easy to navigate thru dvd'd footage.

Hoping to tap into those in the know and get some ideas here to hopefully save myself lots of research time.

You can get a Hikvision TVI bundle with 2TB DVR and 6 2MP 2.8mm dome cameras for under $600 retail at A$I. You're not gonna get too much more budget friendly than that.

IMO, tech support and service with Snap will be better than other options. But, it’s not the cheapest option. You’ll have to weigh which factor is the most important.

There’s also this option, if you want to really go cheap. For other things I’ve dealt with this company on, their support has been the best that exists

While I'll agree that Snap will offer better support, I have not come across an issue with any of the Hik systems I've installed that required a call to support. I don't mind paying more for good support, but when paying 2 to 3 times the price for the same or similarly specced product, its gets to be a tough pill to swallow. Especially in residential surveillance. So many people see the Costco prices and expect that a system will cost in that range. I used to push Wirepath before Luma was out and got kickback on the pricing often enough that I had to look at some other options.

In the past I tried to use the Hikvision app and found it sucked pretty bad - at least in terms of offering a somewhat intuitive app for a customer that won’t surely result in a call when they get a new phone and cant enter in the right DNS settings.

Youre telling me Luma isnt any more intuitive? I’m asking because I haven’t used the Luma app

It's the same app, except purple instead of red.

If you have any Hik systems out that you have the login credentials for the app for, you can plug them into the Luma app to try it. It will work. About the only difference I noticed was the buttons on the bottom (pic quality, zoom...) are positioned differently on the icon ribbon. Oh, and one labels the pic quality options as High and Medium and the other labels them as Fluent and Clear. Otherwise, the same.

This client is extremely wealthy but you wouldn't know it. Owns a global business. He still has like 13" tube Tv's on mounts on the wall. He has zero knowledge about this stuff other then the DIY brands like nest advertising all the time. I've been trying to explain how like anything there is DIY stuff, then professional grade stuff. But I know if i throw an expensive solution at him he will decline. So i figure i'll offer something lesser, get the project and at least make some kind of profit versus none. I did work for his cousin who then referred me to him. They have lots of wealthy connections and you never know what it will lead to. So i want to get him going with something half ass decent.

What I don't want is stuff that doesn't work well and will be a headache later. I did notice that the Snap stuff was a little more expensive then I thought it would be.

So what about icrealtime? No one has said anything about them yet. Honeywell has some pretty good priced packages too. But I worry their app might be tied into subscription service like all their total connect stuff.

IcRealtime is Dahua based. Like Snap, you will pay quite a bit more for the same gear as regular Dahua stuff. I find Dahua and Hikvision apps to be on the same level as far as use and ease. With Hik, when you set his app up, it will open to his cams. With Dahua, you have to press on the favorites button, which you'll have to setup, and then select his system. I find Dahua app easier if using multiple sites, but for a single location, I have found people like when the app opens to show cams without having to do anything.

[Link: snapav.com] found a demo of the Luma app although its short and sweet. Then I downloaded the hikvision and the Luma app. Ya pretty much identical. The cameras look identical too. So guess its pretty obvious hikvision is the oem for luma and just less expensive as mentioned lol. good to know.
