This would include 4 cameras for a main house and 2 cameras for a detatched garage, plus the doorbell cam. Something that doesn't break the bank. What do you recommend? Even if it's wireless. Oh, and need the ability to view remotely and review footage.

I know the options are going to be limited but I figure someone here has got to have some sort of idea about what may work. If it's wired, I know the installation will be a sunnuvabeach but I'm used to that at least.

Use a Dahua 8 channel NVR and put their doorbell camera on the recorder. Not sure if it will output a dual stream, so you may loose the doorbell feature, but can still enable motion on the doorbell camera to get notifications.

Is this for your own house?
I hope it is not for a customer, since it doesn't sound like you have any experience with CCTV. At least not enough.

You will need to do some research on the Doorbell camera, if you want it to record onto the DVR. Especially with motion. Not all of them can do it - if fact many can't.
Last year I tried a Doorbird with a Hikvision DVR. I could record the stream but there was no motion feature available. Even thou both were ONVIF compliant.

Clare can do this. They use the Hik stuff though.

But it works well.

Synology nas with surveillance station and licenses to suit.

I was forced to learn this a few months back on an axis camera system. Honestly, its one of the best NVRs ive seen so far. remote playback is a bit cludgy, if they could get that figured out without having to do port forwards this is all I would offer.

Do you need specifically a doorbell camera, or will a camera dedicated to the front door area work?

You do Tik don’t you?? I setup the Tik vpn for the client. They download the surveillance app. I then tell the client to use the vpn then open the app. Works a hell of a lot better and no ports to forward.

Also newer ROS version puts in a new filter rule in the firewall that hasn’t been there before (after ticking vpn on quickset on initial setup). The rule drops all from WAN that is not from the LAN. This is only for router web/winbox access. Kicked me in the but a couple weeks ago and had to have the client disable the rule for me.

Once he did, I added the range of vpn ips in source address list for that rule and all was good again.

You're partially correct...I've installed lots of cameras...physically. I don't know the network side of it though, I've never had the opportunity to do that/never been taught. Just runnin wires and terminatin and hangin and pluggin in. (I know what plugs in where and why). Mostly Flir cameras and nvr's but some Wirepath as well. It's not for my house or a client though, it's for a friend's house.


I was thinking about suggesting that myself after this post. I mean...it'll do the job. If they wanna know who is at the door, they can just look. It's not a huge house. She wants the system so she can catch who has been messing with her stuff.

Motion recording?
As I said in my post: when I tried this combo last year, I could only do continuous recording. No motion recording option was available.

You like the synology or the Axis NVR?
