At least they can catch their own food. Heck, some even leave it by your door. So you can collect the food to feed it to them later.

In the earlier years of schools getting wired, someone wrote up a school that used a pet rat to ACTUALLY PULL wires through the walls. The rat, unimaginatively named Ratty, was one class's pet.
I don't know if he had a union, but he'd sure have some disputes with the guy you showed!
