Do Apple TV FF/REW Command Still Work For You

Tried to watch an iTunes movie last night on Apple TV 4K, and found the C4 FF/REW commands no longer work. A press of FF/REW only moves the timeline like 10 seconds.

It seems like Apple changed how FF/REW is done. Even on the Apple Remote you have to swipe up to get a small preview box, and then swipe left/right to scan through the movie.

Before I could just tap FF up to three times to FF.

Just wondering if it's only my code set or what. I'm using IR control at the moment.

Haven't used the 4K Apple yet but have the AppleTV4 and FF and Rew work perfectly using IR or IP commands.

FF/REW still work for me. On the new 4K boxes though, with ir you can’t use select to pause and play anymore. You have to use the actual play/pause button. But on C4 and URC the play and pause button are mapped with select I’ve found.

I have had several complaints about this. Its not just C4, its URC too. I also notice it on the new ATV and the new 4k unit too. When you are streaming, it wont FF and REW good.

I have found if you set iTunes to download the movie to your computer, then stream from the computer to the AppleTV the commands work fine. But you need to make sure you have your computer not set to sleep, and it has to be stored on the main HDD.

If you put it on a NAS or external, Sierra and High Sierra wont automount external drives. I had to build a script to automount some NAS drives because of this. If the drive doesn't automount, then iTunes will use the main HDD/iTunes as the default folder, then you wont have access to your movies. Then it streams from the web again and you can't FF and Rew.

This has become a royal pain, and I am telling people to start using Amazon because iTunes and AppleTV just isn't a reliable source for media anymore. These glitches were supposed to be fixed with High Sierra, and they were not. Instead of fixing glitches they just keep rolling out new product.

Yeah, the fact that iTunes doesn't have a built in way to automount a NAS drive is a real pain.

Or at least it used to be - those days are gone for the most part.

Setting up the AppleTV for a client is a complete sh1t show. The fact that you cannot FF or REW streamed content is a big negative. Also, They removed the Track+ and Track- from the control too. You used to be able to track forward every 5 minutes, which was nice. Now you have to do chapters. I just demo'd John Wick 2 on the AppleTV and I think it has 9 chapters to the entire 2 hours movie. What a royal pain.
