They are piling up in my garage, I might have close to 35-40 old AVRS vcrs, dvd plyers you name it starting to take over my garage. I have 4-5 TVs that are broken too. My township doesn’t allow me to place electronics in the trash, however they don’t offer e recycling either. (Have to pay a 3rd party)

I’ve been searching around and can’t find any place that takes them, the closest e recycling place is 3 hours away.

Do scrap yards take them?

The same for old component cables. I have a box that is unmovable full of old cables. Yesterday I literally removed 75lbs worth of component cables. I have got to figure out what todo with all of this!

Check with a scrap yard for the cables- if you don't want the AVRs/other electronics that still work and aren't trying to get anything for them, donate them. Broken TVs may be able to go to Best Buy.

I did some trim around my hearth the other day. Had to use PL to glue it on. Held it in place with a Kenwood, two Denon and an HK receiver.

We had an electronics recycling center at our county landfill when I first started doing business in this county. Every couple months, I’d take a load and drop off. When I went for my last trip, the program had been discontinued and I was told to just take it to the dumpsters with the rest of the household garbage. I went ahead and did it since I had no intention of going home and putting all that crap back in my garage. The county where I’m from, and do most of my business had a private company that did electronics recycling, so I guess now I have to drive crap all the way over there and pay triple what I had been paying. There really needs to be a better solution.

We have at least 6 recycle centers that will gladly take all my old electronics and even pay me for bulk cable and trimmings. I don't know why they make it so hard in some places to simply recycle.

So you have to pay AND they collect for the materials they collect?

And people wonder why anyone would want to get into the scrap business!

My town’s transfer yard takes electronics for free for town residents. Then there is a scrap yard that will take them as well and they pay by he weight.

Both will also take cable. Obviously stripped is better, but with cover is accepted.

Our city sponsors two electronic recycling events each year where you can drop anything electronic off for free, so when possible I just collect stuff and drop off a van full at one of these events.

The local recycle center has two locations that take electronics year-round for free for residential, but as a business you have to pay for certain things.  They take flat screens for free, but all other electronics are 20 cents per pound and batteries are $1.30lb, so a little security panel or UPS battery costs about $6.50ea!

It's just a cost of doing business and can be charged back to the client.

6hr round trip is too far, so pay the 3rd party company to get rid of all the stuff.  Once you know what the rates are, you'll be able to add this cost to your invoice when you dispose of equipment for clients.

Here in CA we have pretty good options for recycling.

My community has a quad-annual event at the community college for e-waste. If it's a working flat panel, I try to pawn it off on the client to give it to their housekeeper/gardener. I will take it if they don't want to deal with it and give it away myself or put it on the curb with a free sign.

I have two clean garbage cans that collect wire. The recycle yard, which is about a 15 minute drive for me, buys the wire from me. Usually end up with about $50 for two full cans, especially if I have lots of cat cable.

Styrofoam and cardboard are my worst enemy. I bag the block styrofoam and pay $5/50 gallon trash bag for recycle, otherwise it ends up in the landfill. Cardboard gets cut up and put in recycle. One thing I miss as a one-man shop is a recycle dumpster.

You could always ebay the good stuff, make a few extra bucks

Craig’s List...

Just use a google voice for the phone number. It’s free and if you get a lot of spam calls. Just don’t use it. Or pay the $10 to change the number. Whenever I deal on CL, I use my google voice phone number.

That's standard operating procedure in West Virginia for garbage disposal of all sorts. Just wait for the creeks to rise, set it on the bank, and voila! Nature takes its course. Best way to get rid of old appliances, used tires, and regular household garbage, according to most residents

Check with a scrap metal recycle place.

Most will take, and pay you for the AVR's, DVD players, VCR's, and cables. I have one here that will take most anything along those lines, so I recycle anything metal and make a few bucks for my time messing with it.

Any of it have any function, put it up on Ebay starting at $.01 with no reserve. Let Fleabay determine shipping cost, and you'll get rid of some of that crap. Might actually make a dollar or two...LOL

Speed reading is dangerous. I misread that as
and regular household garbage, even some residents
