Have a client with a Marantz SR5008. HDMI 1.4a. He getting a Samsung 65mu8000. Also has the 4k Apple TV.

He's wondering what sort of compatibility issues he may run into and quite honestly I'm still not sure what to tell him.

The 5008 does up to 4k/30FPS.

What will he be able to watch?

Thanks.

Craig

Simply tell him that when you upgrade a video source you need to upgrade everything in the video chain. He could get lucky and it may work but the 5008 is five years old and not designed to do what he wants.

There is a good chance that receiver will NOT pass HDR content and other issues with 4K video as well.
The best hope is to disable any video processing the Marantz is doing (Make sure "Video Conversion" is set to OFF), turning it into little more than a HDMI switch (with audio extraction). And see what happens.

Unfortunately if he wants the full 4K experience, he might have to upgrade the receiver. Just have to test to find out.

Note: There have been a lot of issues with 4K and the new Apple 4K TV box as well. So may be hard to figure out which is a Marantz issue and what might be an Apple 4K issue, if things don't go well. If the Apple is his only 4K source, I wouldn't have the customer put to much effort into this right now. CES is just around the corner with all the new gear for next year. Including the latest bug fixes for things.

It should work up to 10.2Gbps. :) I am not sure this means 4k 4:2:0 on Apple TV or 1080p. Hook it up and try it. Worst case, they watch 1080p until they want to upgrade the AVR. Nothing lost on your end. :)

I did advise him that having the weak link in the middle of the signal chain would be a worst case scenario as far as passing 4k, and have been urging him to upgrade the receiver.

I guess we'll see what happens. Thanks for the advice fellas.

Craig.

There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.
