I have been having issues with the ATV 4K consistently delivering HDR. What HTRs have you had success with?
I have been using the Marantz NR1508 and they should work, spec wise, but they have been a bit hit and miss. I have used both LG and Samsung TVs with the same issues. I have found if I plug the TV directly into the TV it works but when I go through the HTR I have issues. 4K is not the issue just HDR, 4K has worked fine. I am primarily doing multi-use rooms and living rooms not big home theaters, so price is a concern.

Wasn't there supposed to be a firmware update for the ATV due to HDR issues?
Have you checked the firmware?
Also are you setting the resolution to Auto or to a set resolution w/o HDR?
I know the 2nd gen had an issue where it would revert back to Auto on the resolution. They probably never corrected that as they didn't see it as an issue.

I have done the update and it did not help. It seems like if you pick a specific resolution and the power cycles it defaults back to auto. I have tried to pick a specific resolution, like 1080P HDR and then I go back to it later and it is 4K SDR.

The one I just did yesterday was an ATV 4K then 1M HDMI then Marantz NR1508 then 6M HDMI to Samsung 8 series TV. If I plug ATV directly into TV, via 6M HDMI, it worked. I tried multiple 1M HDMI and no change. Marantz has a test feature that if you plug a HDMI into input 1 and the output you can go into a test mode and it will test the cable. Slick but no help to solve the HDR issue.

I also have issues with Marantz and the Apple TV.
Got a SR-5012 with supposedly handles it but it won't work. Got a 35ft active cable to a optoma 4k pj.
When hdmi is plugged directly to Apple TV it works fine. Through the Marantz it's a no go with any setting.
Annoying.

I have experienced similar issues. Recent install, 8000 series Samsung, Marantz SR-5012, ATV 4K. HDR will not work. Have the new XBoX One X connected to the Marantz and 4k HDR works just fine. Connect ATV to TV bypassing Marantz and it works. Very frustrating

I spent some time today with an Apple TV 4k, Yamaha TSR7810, Sony z9, and a Sony soundbar.
Direct to TV, HDR 4:2:2 no problem. Through Yamaha, sdr only. I dinked with all the settings in everything. What ended up "fixing" it was setting video in Yamaha to "processing " instead of "direct", then setting output resolution to 4k. This allowed apple TV to send hdr 4:2:2.
For the record, it worked fine through that crusty soundbar which is in use for the time being until client decides on speakers.

On a Yamaha, make sure you set it to '4K Mode 1' under advanced settings.
Also, make sure it's running the very latest firmware update (it's less than a week old).
The Apple TV should be typically set to 4:2:2 30Hz

I've been researching a similar issue with the PS4, and Denon suggests setting the HDMI output to "Enhanced". Marantz has the same setting. Does the 1508 have this? The 5012 does.

We use Sony and Marantz receivers. I really only have problems with the AppleTV 4k. I can use a Roku 4k or Sony UBP800 and they both work through the receivers great with 4k HDR. AppleTV does not. Again as others have said, appletv straight to the TV works fine. What a pain in the a$$.

I have been having issues with jobs that have Comcast X1 and a LG TV with HDR. On two jobs the ATV4K work after some fiddling but now is very consistent. The issue is after a while of ATV when you switch to the X1 the TV just turn to HDMI static, not sure what the technical name for this is. Most of the time if the TV is off for a while and then you turn on the X1 it is fine but if you go from ATV to X1 you get the full screen static. Sometimes you get no X1 video just static and sometimes you will be watching X1 for a while and then the static kicks in.
Not ideal.

Was on line with Marantz tech support today for another issue and discussed this with him.
Was discussing an issue with the PS4 pro and he suggested new cables.
His reply:
"About 95% of the calls coming in have been related to either the HDMI cable between the TV and the receiver or the HDMI cable between the 4K device and the recevier not being capable of supporting the bandwidth being pushed by the 4K device.
A Ultra or Premium High Speed HDMI cable capable of 18gbps or faster is required. A 48gbps cable (HDMI 2.1) is preferred. Your total cable length (INPUT >> RECEIVER >> TV) with passive HDMI cables should be no more than 15 feet. For cable lengths 15 feet or longer, we recommend ACTIVE HDMI cables. For longer than 25 feet, we recommend Fiber Optic HDMI cables or a Balun."
I explained that we solved the problem by changing receiver models from an AVRx4300h to an AVRx4400h. And that cables weren't the issue as we were using 18gb/s cables.
His reply:
"The reason we usually go with cables first is that similar to other data transmitting cables it's not 18gbps it's UP TO 18gbps. You don't always get the full 18gbps depending on the cable. It can vary between manufacturers and even similar cables from the same manufacturer. This is why Apple recommends 48gbps cables to use with their new 4K Apple TV."
I havn't heard anyone mentioning using a 48gb/s cable. Perhaps this info can help with ATV4k installs.

I actually fixed my marantz problem. Put on the HD-GA1 between the AVR and TV. It's weird I could get HDR from my Sony UBP, and my Roku, but not the AppleTV. Either way the HD-GA1 fixed it....thanks Metra!

I fixed my Marantz issue as well replacing the cable. Since this was an install for a friend just went and ordered a mono price 40ft cable. It was an active cable. Worked fine once we put it in.
