Has anyone every hooked up a nest with a zone valve?

I hooked up a Nest 3rd Gen today with a standard Honeywell V8043E1012 24VAC Zone valve and for some reason it would not kick on the zone valve. If I touch the Rh and W1 wires together the zone valve opens and heat turns on.

If I move the Rh and W1 wires over to Rc and Y1 and call for cooling the zone valve opens and the heat turns on.

I am not sure if I did anything wrong but I attached a diagram of basically how it is hooked up.

Maybe one of you encountered this issue before.

3rd Gen

What would cause the backplate to go bad?

No idea other than a design, quality control, or voltage issue. It's happened to a number of them, however, I don't think they were 3rd Gen though.
