Apple is supposed to release an update to allow you to select 4:2:0 output.

now we need Netflix to step up and offer 4:2:0 support as well.

Do you offer any bandaids to fix in the meantime?

We do not, and the sad part is this, it is all for marketing.
There is currently no actual 4:4:4 content available (except a very few games).
More importantly, the 4:2:0 to 4:4:4 conversion is better done in the display.

And category cable can't support the bandwidth to transmit anyways, correct? Anyone saying they are doing it is doing so.with heavy compression.

I just assumed like every other device in the planet, I'd be able to disable any modes that were unsupported. Ridiculous.

I'd be curious to know specifically which 3G encoder and Decoders you are using and what Specific Displays they are connected to. And, Of course, Are you using an ATV4?

Obviously, J+P isnt doing 4:4:4 (Is it even 4:2:0?) with only 500Mbs of bandwidth. How it actually handling the EDID's?

So you are saying you've tried an Apple TV 4K with JAP and it worked on 4:4:4?

So here's the update:

We set all displays and Apple TVs to RGB. That stabilized things a little especially on the stand alone sets. But the real kicker came in when I set the Marantz receivers to "enhanced" from "standard" 4K. The reason I had not done this before was that the receiver in both rooms was telling me something was wrong with the cables so it would not work so I didn't accept because I really did not want to have to factory default units. Out of frustration I forced "enhanced" on both units and walla...no more flickering, no more blackouts, minimal sync issues, etc etc etc.

I turns out I was attempting to lower the resolution to make it easier on the system but the Apple TV was forcing its higher resolution so I needed to force the system to perform rather that step things down. In some ways opposite of what we have been taught over the years with HDMI.

HOWEVER....The system is still largely inoperable. About 50 percent of the time on Netflix and maybe 20 percent of the time on Hulu, when we play anything the screen just shows green or black. We can still see the network logo in the corner and the Apple TV subtitle screen pulls down, navigation bar is shown but any content is just a green or black screen. Not a little washed out like the purple screen we have all seen but a solid green image.

Thoughts?

I believe the 4K Apple TV always has HDR enabled regardless of the source content. This way the screen doesn't blank out for several seconds when you switch between SDR and HDR which Apple considers bad UX.

There are options in the menu for 4K SDR or 4K HDR and within those you can change from 4:4:4, 4:2:2, 4:2:0.  Not sure if these all show up with an extender but they do with direct HDMI cables.

Also, the upconversion of HD content looks amazing.

As someone else mentioned I've seen the binary 1x2 splitters and EDID restorers fix a lot of these types of issues. Also play with the EDID settings in the matrix. I don't use wyrestorm so I can't speak to much more on that.

This is different than the standard 1x2 splitter fix. This really needs to be managed through EDID. I am not familiar with how the WyreStorm manages EDID, but if it is possible I would try to copy the EDID of the Sony 32 and play with that. One issue that may be coming into effect, is that standard EDID information may be getting handled correctly, but the extended data that manages the HDR/HDMI 2.1 functionality, may be what is causing the issue. I believe there is an issue with the way that the Apple is handling the EDID as well as the way that the WyreStorm is handling the extended EDID data. If you have some sort of EDID minder/emulator, I would try putting that at the head end with the Apple TV going directly into that. Every new generation of Apple Tvs brings about a whole new group of issues to deal with. On top of this it appears you may also be having HDCP issues if you are seeing a green screen and black screen. I think there is just more than one problem going on here. However, I would be on the lookout for an Apple update. Good luck!

Or try an older Apple TV
