...a coax to each TV location should stay, so I called DirecTV and ordered two RF remotes and mounts for their boxes....

This project should be a commercial install, not a residential install, and some commercial equipment is different from resi equipment. Whenever you go RF control with a commercial DirecTV box, remember to verify whether the receiver has a built-in antenna for the RF remote. Not all of them do and that's an irritating thing to discover on site!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

The remote, mount and antler came as a kit- I told them what I wanted and they accommodated.

So... it was a buck? How many points?

Neither we nor the supplier thought to make a point of it. We do now.

I don't go in with pre-conceived notions when I start a project- I like to see what I'm dealing with and work with problems as they arise. I had used the mounts and RF remotes before, so it only took a quick phone call to get the ball rolling.

I suppose I HAVE been operating under a "preconceived notion."

It seems pretty reasonable to me, though, that when several years' worth of DirecTV receivers have responded to RF control when you get and use an RF remote, that this will continue to happen unless the distributor happens to tell you that this and such new receiver needs not only the usual and accepted RF remote, but that the antenna is not built into the unit.

This brings up another subject: is there a unified place for DirecTV products comparable to, say, the Yamaha website, where receiver specifications for all current models are given?

Now expand that to a clear and complete list of LNBs and SWiM products, a list that would make it possible to know ALL about the current models and system arrangements. A LOT of information is out there, but it's all incomplete and therefore not necessarily accurate.

It actually seems like DirecTV doesn't want all their information to be available from one place.

I called 800-DIRECTV, not a distributor. I'm not a DirecTV dealer, installer and when I need to talk to them, I call. I also prefer to cut the crap and ask for Tier 2 as soon as they answer.

I recently had a call from a cheapo contractor who thought that he could make some money by installing the wires himself -- why get me involved? He missed the point about active HDMI cables that there is an "in" and "out". He asked if I could swap ends. He's the type who would try wire nuts next. (Well, maybe not wire nuts, because he knows that I don't like them -- he'd use crimps)

Cheap contractor's are a real problem.

I loved them, since they were the source of very high dollar jobs. After all, fixing those huge screw ups should be expensive..

One I dealt with ran a single "lamp cord" from the head end to each speaker location. I asked if he wanted the left or the right channel....LOL

Yeah there was a solution, but it wasn't a great one.

Worst was the one the didn't have any coax or phone jacks installed.

I'm not sure whether a contractor did this, or it was the end user, but...

Years ago someone brought in a turntable that wasn't performing properly. Someone had extended the signal wires.

I found that they had cut the two shielded cables and the ground wire to the same length, stripped all five conductors back about an inch, twisted those wires around a single 14 gauge THNN, and soldered them. About four feet away at the other end of the THNN they did the same thing.

They didn't understand why their wire extension didn't work.

This really happened -- I don't have the kind of imagination that would think of that.

Aw, c'mon! Don't underestimate yourself.
