Have been using 17.3" Dell laptop for last 3-5 years.
Use it a lot. 4-8 hours a day/night, 7 days a week.
Love the number pad on it.

- Looking for 15-17" 2-in-1 to see if I like the tablet mode and touchscreen.
Don't need a lot of power as I'm not doing any picture or video editing.
This old laptop is good enough to keep 12 browser windows open, Outlook and Control4 composer. Anything else (URC, Lutron, CCTV, network apps) open in just a few seconds.
Once open, everything works just as fast as supercomputer as far as I'm concerned.

- Would like to find one that has RJ45 built in.
I know i can use the dongle, but I rather have it built-in.

- Backlit keyboard is a must.

- Needs to be a native Windows, no apple please.

My wife wants one and we've looked at Dell & HP.  If the number pad is important to you, I think the only 2-in-1 that has numeric pad is the HP Envy x360 but it's a lower-end model that is thicker and doesn't have SSD drive option.

I think she's going to give up the number pad and get the 15" HP Spectre x360 which is nice and thin with 4k display and SSD drive.

The 15" dell 2-in-1s (Inspiron 7000 series) seem ok, but still missing the 10-key (number pad).  They are available with SSD, but only 1920x1080 screen... wife didn't like the styling of the Dell as well as the HP.

Seems like everything except for the lowest-end models have backlit keyboards now.  I don't remember seeing an Ethernet port on any of the 2-in-1 models... seems like traditional laptops are even missing Ethernet ports.

2-in-1 rules out every 17" as far as i know. I think you have to decide if you want 17" with touch and an ethernet port or if you want a 2-in-1 15".

I havent been able to find a 2 in 1 with an RJ45 port. This is on my list of must haves also after dealing with MBP dongles for a couple of years now. One brand works with apple one with windows...pita.

Lenovo Yoga for 2-in-1. HP for 17" touch.

Looking at all the reviews and videos, the 17" tablet is just too big.
That, coupled with the fact that I have a really good eyesight and can get the same content out of a smaller screen, due to higher resolution (DPI), puts my research in the 15" space.

Paul, I agree with you that I might have to give up on ethernet port.
I don't know if there is a single 2-in-1 that has one -- certainly not one I found.
I do a bunch of data transfers and setup of new networks where WiFi is not yet setup, thus the desire for hardline. I guess I'll have to learn to live with a dongle.

Are there any recent releases?
Everything that I'm seeing is from Feb. 2017 or from 2016.
I tend to keep my equipment for a long time -- don't want to start with 1+ year old tech, knowing that it'll be my main workhorse for next 4-5 years.

This is what I think my wife is going to get... Looks like it's a new model and not shipping until next month:

I just purchased refurb Lenovo Thinkpad T430 Win10 Pro & 8GB ram for $299, also 525GB SSD for $149. Great computer? No, but $450 is all I need for a jobsite machine.

I spend real money on desktop, need the horsepower for ACad.

A co-worker replaced the hinge on his, it cost less than 20 bucks. Maybe you just want a new laptop anyway, though...
Everyone should learn something new every day.

I've been wanting a new laptop for a while. Mine is getting long in the tooth.
I've been putting it off due to PITA factor of moving/reinstalling all the programs.
Data is easy -- sync Dropbox and I'm done.
Passwords too since I use LastPass.

It's all the weird old programs that I haven't touched in 3+years that I know are going to come back and bite me in the arse at some point. Things like old URC programs, Panasonic 824 software, etc.

This hinge failure is a message from above that I should upgrade. I can't argue with higher powers. :-)

BTW, I'm probably going to fix the hinge since it's still a good and powerful machine. I can give it to my DiL and it'll get plenty of use with any of the 19 grandkids.

I have a decent desktop with 4K 55" monitor for ACad and multitask work.

I find myself working at 3am while in bed; catching up on QB and making remote programming changes in composer.
It might be silly for some, but I'm making partial decision on machine I use based on which side the power cord plugs into the laptop.
I.E. I sleep on right side of the bed.

Watched these videos which guided me towards the Spectre:

Paul,
I decided to go with same one, but the 16G of RAM and 512G of SSD. $1,499 minus corporate discount I get.
It sucks that it won't be available for almost 3 weeks with shipping.
I could pick one up today at BestBuy, but it'll be few hundred bucks more and they won't price match even retail HP's prices.

These two are identical:

MacBook Pro with Bootcamp and Windows 10 ;)
You can charge on either side plus have gigabit Ethernet via thunderbolt dongle.

Nah, Apple is evil. Plus with the new 4k displays, native windows machines are better and cheaper than apple.

Best way to go. You could not pay me to use a plasticy, clunky, cheap windows machine. And they ALL are all of that.
