Went iPhone with family because ATT no longer supports my location with usable service. Went Sprint and BOGO iPhones. Discovered a flaw like a remote going to a page without a way back. Went in a legit site. Click on a pic in a thread. Absolutely no way back short of going into history and selecting page again. Missing something? Never an issue with my Samsung phone. It had multiple option for backing up.

It had multiple option for backing up. Double click on the Home button- it should show all of the pages with a plus button at the bottom and an X at an upper corner. Click on the X to remove the page you want gone and scroll through the pages and apps to see what you want to remove or turn off. Press the Home button when you're done, to return to the main page. You can keep multiple pages open by using this feature, or remove all of them. More apps means less battery life, as you probably know.

Assuming you were in the safari browser app... you swipe down and tool bar appears on the bottom with a back arrow on left most side of said bar.

Double clicking the Home button will only open the multi tasking section of the iPhone. Not the multi page in Safari, which is what the OP wants to know.
In Safari, on the Plus, not sure about non-Plus, model iPhones. And in landscape mode. You can pull the page down, so the top of the page shows, and you’ll see the multiple tabs opened. Or you and pinch close with 2 fingers.
In portrait mode, should be all models, just pull the page down to show the top. And you should see the full address bar as well as some buttons at the bottom. Fwd and back arrows, a share button, History and tabs button. Clicking the tabs button will show the other opened tabs.
On all models, swiping those tabs to the left will close them.

You can also just swipe the whole screen to the right which is the same as pushing the back button

More apps means less battery life, as you probably know. Not true on iOS. Constantly closing apps actually reduces battery life because then the phone has to to all the work to reload the apps the next time you open them. iOS is insanely optimized to keep apps from draining battery in the background. [Link: businessinsider.com]As for going back in Safari (and most apps), all you have to do is swipe from the left edge of the screen.

I have never run into a situation where I had to do anything but swipe or hit the back button to get out.

[Link: businessinsider.com]As for going back in Safari (and most apps), all you have to do is swipe from the left edge of the screen. This. In general, you shouldn't manually close apps on iOS devices. In Safari, scrolling a webpage up should pull up the bottom bar w/ navigation (back, fwd, share, history, tabs). Sites that utilize scrolling lists / objects can mess this up. You can always 'pop' the bottom bar by tapping the Safari header bar at top of screen. I don't think this happens in Safari, but it does in iOS Photos, Twitter and other apps: opening an image full screen and zooming in on it blocks navigation until you revert to original image preview. You have to pinch the image before you can swipe left or right for next etc.
