Looking for some good noise canceling headphones. Active or Passive, just need something to drone out the planes engine/screaming kids. Some available through our channel would be preferable.

Also something preferably on the cheaper end. Need to buy 2 for myself and the +1

I know there are a few people on here that are into headphones. I also am not against those from Denon etc. for me and maybe sony/sennheiser/bose for her. the +1 doesnt like "loud" (normal level for us) so if I can kill two birds with one stone for me and be able to listen to my "2ch" system at home and drown out the engine drone on the go that would be great!

Thanks Much!

As a matter of a fact, just order 2 sets of whatever your research points you to and send me the 2nd set.

I made several long airline flights a few years ago and somewhere, maybe even at the airport, I found a $40 or so over the ear set by RCA. The treble wasn't great but the lack of noise was!

I really hate to say it, but Bose makes good noise-cancelling headphones (they also make swell shock absorbers).
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I have had Bose noise cancelling headphones for years. I just replaced the foam ear covers which wear out over time. They are part of my necessary gear for traveling along with a tablet for entertainment.

I tried the new Sony models and they were also nice- and Bluetooth. Nice not having cords to get tangled in on the jet.

Either way, it's a nice break from "society" on the plane. Unfortunately, this won't stop the 4 year old behind you from pushing your seat with his feet and the parents that are typically clueless.

I have been in the business for over 30 years and we had a 16 track recording studio in our home growing up. I preached the "No highs, No lows... Must be Bose" line all thru the retail years! We sold STAX and Fostex headphones in the store and used the Fostex in the studio.

No one was more surprised than ME when I purchased for MYSELF the Bose Quiet Comfort 35's last year!!! I had to file the Bose label off them to save face.

I auditioned all of the Noise Cancelling units I could find and the last two standing at the time were the Beats and the Bose.

For what its worth, I'm happy other than the shit I get for buying Bose.

I didn't want to be the first to mention the B*** word, but I have been happy for years with theirs; first the over-ear model and now with the earbud, which I find comfortable and effective.

New Sony 1000 series is really fantastic. Ive owned a few pairs of the Bose (begrudgingly) as the noise cancelling was so good. However, the new Sony models are on par with Bose on that front, personally I think they sound better and I also prefer the design. I never travel without them and even use them at homw to tune out my 4 (3 teenagers) sons:)

A family member who is a pilot uses Bose, as many small plane pilots do. I was pretty amazed also.

So I have a question that I tried to get an answer to before my purchase of the noise cancelling headphones.

As I understand it there is a microphone that listens to the “noise” creates an inverse of that and plays it back, thus “cancelling” it out.

My question was and is... if you are using these in a loud environment of say 90db; is your ear getting 180db?

No, your ear is getting 90db but in opposite phase.
Why would it be twice the amplitude?

Not sure I understand or agree completely. Without doing any research, my thought is that if the two sound waves cancel each-other out, your are getting less than 90db. If you were to get 90db of silence, wouldn't it just be pressure?

Good discussion. I'm sure someone will find a thesis for us to review:)

Right, so after about 5 minutes, you are deaf, and ALL noise from that point forward is inaudible...
