I like SB's answer. The thing is that you're looking for a one word answer (plumber, electrician... etc), when even those descriptions are weak... Electrician= residential? Lineman? Generation plant? Plumber= house? municipal? Naval?
Even Doctor has issues (like, a REAL Dr. or do you just think about things? HA HA). Go one step further and say MD (Medical Doctor) and then when they ask you to look at the rash on their back.... and you have to explain that you specialize in researching left/right hemispherical interopability post-operative bisection for seizure treatment.........blank stare..... yeah, sure, let me look at that rash..
We are very much specialist working in a generalist world.

In my world we have 'software engineer'. That's safe enough and most folks don't know what it actually means, but don't want to seem like they don't, so they'll smile and leave it at that.
I always feel a little pompous though calling myself an 'engineer' really. OTOH, and I guess 'engineer' seems a little pedestrian a description for what I do, which is really closer to 'logician' than anything to do with building things. But 'Logician Monk' isn't likely to go over well.
If the person asking is cute, I can always go with 'technical entrepreneur' which implies I may be working on an IPO as we speak.

I like to act like I'm completely insulted and shout "Don't you know who I am?". :D

Ed will be known as the Tiger Woods of the integration business, followed closely with the renaming of his company to "Hotties A/V". The tag line will be "We like big racks and tight holes"... |

I've used magician (or what we do is magic) often...and "the AV guy" many more when talking with tradespeople; but my current quick warp for people I meet is
"I own a Home Theater sales and installation company and we focus on Residential and Light Commercial Audio Video and Technology sales and integration services..."
Some of my other favorites are - we provide and install adult toys - My job is to be smarter then (or solve problems created by) the engineers that designed the equipment you bought so that you can use it the way you want - I'm the make shit work guy

I say "I'm a specialty contractor that designs and installs smart home systems like lighting control and automated shades for estate style homes".
If the conversation continues I'll mention that I do custom audio/video work with a focus on hiding TVs using automation to raise them out of the floor or a cabinet or drop down from the ceiling or even conceal behind moving art.
Saying that I'm a contractor working on estate homes seems to help set the tone that I'm involved with building high-end homes and not just plugging in IOT devices.
Most people have also seen a TV pop out of a cabinet or drop down from the ceiling, so that example helps them understand what I do. /thread This is what I'm going to plagiarise from now on. Big thanks!
