It's like 50% lazy and 50% OCD. I have tools allover the place. So many at this point i can't even organize them...and when i do i end up having things at the office or at my house or in my car instead of where i need them. I wont even look at the tools at the office anymore because if i see them my disorder adds them to the queue of things i have to sort and organize.


I don't have many mechanics tools or "carpenter" quality tools. I have mostly AV tech stuff and battery power tools. Chop saw, table saw etc are usually whatever the cheapest tool was when i needed it that one time at a job. I recently lost a grand in tools to the rain when i left a job box outside and it filled up with water. Tools sat in water for about 2 weeks before i realized the top had a hole in it allowing rain water to get in. My first whole saw...a great hammer drill and my 75th anniversary sawzall with the chrome body all rusted out.

Stock a kitchen drawer with your most used tools, and there you have your custom kit. Works for me, in my kitchen.

In some respects I'm not sure that a toolbox in every room would solve the problem. It seems that tools will migrate anyway. How about a child's mittens type tether to keep the tools on location.

I've had the same model for 8 or so years, since i started using one. Only reason I have replaced is when its gotten worn or if I broke it. I didn't think i would care for it either at first. I didn't even buy the first one, my father in law gave it to me for Xmas. Seriously one of the best gifts I ever got.

I have a van full of tools. I have two husky tool carts in the garage with tools, and have some temp shelving setup in the basement of the new house with plastic drawers with some tools for household stuff. I have no need for more, unless I need a specialty tool that is required to accomplish something. I think most guys just like the idea of MORE tools cause tools are fun. Going to Sears Hardware, HD, Lowes, or HF and my eyes light up going down the tool aisles. I then reminds myself I have pretty much everything I need.

Im a big fan of their unibits, and also of their cheap fish sticks and moving blankets.
