Good day everyone.

In my own system I have a Niles SI-1230 running a bunch of speakers through out the house. In my kitchen for speakers I have a crap old pair of JBL bookshelf speakers on top of my kitchen cabinets.

It's time for an upgrade. I can do a pair of in wall speakers above the cabinets or a pair of in ceiling.

The issue is I want more bass. The volume I get with the SI-1230 is plenty. But I feel that (at least in my experience) the in-walls or in ceilings will be lacking in bottom end.

If I go in ceiling I can do back boxes as I have attic access, but I'm really considering a sub-woofer. I don't feel like in ceiling is an option. That'll be a hard sell to the wife and there is already a lot going on up there with lighting etc. Above the cabinets I have 11.5" of wall height and 14" of width for anything inwall.

I have a 250watt plate amp from a sub who's woofer met its end.

Can anyone give recommendations for a compact passive in wall sub?

Or, a way to get some decent bottom end from just in ceiling/wall speakers.

Thanks.

Craig.

We have had the best luck with "tube subs". [Link: sonance.com]

Take care with bass energy coupling into the cabinet. There are lots of little things in there that will rattle and buzz when excited.

Why not just use a pair of quality 3-way in-walls with a large woofer like Sonance VP8X series?

Edit: just saw your space constraints. How deep are the upper cabinets?

Those James units with the bandpass enclosure and the ducting are nice.

Thanks everyone

Not home right now. I'll measure the cabinets tonight.

Those subs with the tubes and smaller holes exiting ceiling look promising.

I did think about the contents of the cabinet rattling. Doesn't happen with the JBLs but then they are not subs.
