Well, here is your big chance - the co-inventor himself.

There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Tom, more importantly, why are you reading 10 year old AVS threads? Have you lost your way? Come back to the light please.

I feel like I've been Rick Rolled, lol

What came first- a cable that makes our lives a living hell, or a device that's supposed to make it work with ten year old equipment?

Those people need to be launched into deep space. HDMI should never have been allowed to go so long.

Proud to say that my friend and grad-school classmate Eric Almgren was a key instigator, as founder of Silicon Image, the company behind HDMI. We got our MBAs at UT Austin in 1990. Super-nice guy, quiet, principled, modest, dry wit, and a masterful businessman. Of course, it would be another 5 or 6 years before I heard of HDMI. And then a few more years til I put it all together with Eric and all. It was quite a reunion when we met up at a CES around 1999.

I promised to do a story on the making of HDMI.

Good for him. Now, have him go into the field and help people fix the problems he's responsible for. He should also come here and read the comments about these problems, which have cost us and our clients dearly. Designing a system of transmitting AV data that periodically makes the cabling obsolete is a terrible way to do business- the least they could have done is state a time frame for when new "improvements" would come out so we're not blind-sided by problems that we had hoped wouldn't occur. Because of the incompatibility between signal changes and cabling, I now have to drive three hours to replace a cable that had been working perfectly. I really don't enjoy hearing that I installed a system that doesn't work when they have their family or a room full of kids who want to watch movies, but have no video. It wouldn't be so bad if it was during the day, but hearing about it on a weekend evening is worse.

Great.
Hope it's an HDMI killer.
Can't wait to use electrical tape to hold devices aligned in order to stream 8k video content, or tell clients to move one of the boxes 1/8 of an inch , left, right, up or down every time they have video dropouts.
AVR will look interesting with all those sources just laying there.

I hope the new project isn't as much of a cluster as HDMI. I am sure with all the revisions it made him rich while frustrating the rest of the world. If I was building a cabling standard I would be looking into the needs of technology 20 years from now and not what is currently needed. I could have told you when HDMI came out that it didn't have enough bandwidth for future applications. Never mind the physical properties that made it a nightmare for installers like limited length, non-locking connectors and non not being able to terminate a cable. Never mind all the revisions and equipment incompatibilities.

Julie, we love you but I hope your friend was a 1st year engineering student with a good business plan when he developed HDMI because any decent engineer would not have developed such a poor standard. As an industry standard, HDMI is a bad joke forced upon consumers! Since HDMI was built off DVI and 8B/10B before that, it could have been easily built off of fiber optics 20+ years ago and not given us anywhere near the headaches and would have eliminated many of the problems and continuous upgrades that HDMI causes.

I don't think any of us are fans of HDMI.

Regardless of what it became, it was quite a feat to wrangle Hollywood and device manufacturers to agree on something that could bridge content with delivery. Who knows what else would have emerged? Could've been better. Could've been worse. HOllywood and big CE chose it over firewire and others. I'd be damn proud of myself to be that kind of business person.

Oh wow, impressive! He got Hollywood to go along with him in creating a technology that doesn’t work for a problem that doesn’t exist.

I don’t think I’d admit to knowing him. And I sure wouldn’t rave on his success. He’s a modern day snake oil salesman that used political power to get his inferior creation made the only option.

If there is any karma in the world, someone from this site will one day meet him in an alley and kick him in the nuts and take his wallet.

That would not be enough. Money has been being taken from all our wallets, our clients and ourselves, ever since the introduction of this nightmare.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

The amount of frustration HDMI has forced on the world is the kind of thing that makes some people wish they could undo what was done. Some people. I wouldn't consider being so proud if the intent is compared with the reality.

Biggest cluster flop I have ever seen.

Everything mentioned here is so true. I have a pile of HDMI devices; receivers, extenders...etc..in my garage. What a waste of investments and time that could have been a nice vacation for my family. How dare anyone praise a person who was a founder of this technology. We will never get any of this back. Someone please send a link to this thread to him.

And let’s not forget, his creation wasn’t needed in the first place. It created problems instead of solving them.
