Let's skip the whole alexa thing and talk about how absolutely horrible the new app is compared to the old one.

Most of my clients have at least 10 zones. Only displaying 3 zones on the zones page is a problem. The tiles for each zone are too big. Maybe I should have gotten the iphone 8 plus...how many zones can plus users see?

Oy! It’s now “my Sonos” ohh man, I hope this doesn’t screw with C4 either

It appears the favorites are deleted. The "My Sonos" tab is empty.

I'm sure that they got an A+ in the Apple GUI design school for minimum element count on each screen and the requirement for lots of "touching". Apple seems to want people to "discover" things. One lands on a minimalist screen, then must discover if one should swipe, scroll. touch, or whatever and to add further to the discovery adventure, some elements scroll down, while others scroll left-right. Each screen is a new adventure.

If sonos has such a better interface than anyone else, which is why they previously wouldn’t work with control systems, why do they keep changing their app? There should have never been a reason to change it.

On a similar note, iOS completely ****ed up the keyboard on the non-Plus sized phones. Almost a third of the screen space is now unused, making the keyboard smaller

I don't think this version of the app is that bad, it seems more self explanatory than the old one, i.e. Names of menus rather than 3 little lines in a corner. I think for older people it will be easier to use. Also for a while the Sonos app has had to be deleted on ios and reloaded to install the update. Not sure why that is.

Verge did a write-up for the DIY crowd with set-up instructions and was nice enough to include a list of recognized commands and known limitations/issues.  Might be a useful quick read.

Here is also a good article that describes the choice Sonos made and where Sonos is going. [Link: macobserver.com]

Seems Sonos decided to go the route of making the Sonos an extension of Alexa vs. a service. As a service Sonos could have released a full feature set to control all aspects of Sonos today. Curious to know if Sonos could have done both and give people an option but I guess that would have been confusing. I think their decision is a mistake and will lead to consumer frustration. All to avoid having to use the command "Tell Sonos" after "Alexa".

Maybe Sonos is thinking more people will probably use the app to start and elect music and then just use Alexa to control volume, pause or resume. play next track, etc. Especially for existing Sonos Households. That is really all its good for in its current state if you usual music sources aren't one of the few that are avail within Alexa. For a company that has the widest range of music choices avail it seems like a silly decision on its face. I guess the flip side is they had no choice to stem the bleed for those who are buying Alexa over Sonos. The New Play1 is that answer and a much better choice over buying an Alexa.  Also, it gives the ability to easily switch platforms to Google or Apple , or maybe use multiple platforms, in the future without having to throw away hardware.
