Use a raspberri pi as a proxy with a 5Ghz AP only narrow band channel for wifi.
Or go 900mhz

The concerns of the college make sense. Why can’t you limit his usage on the cell account? I know att allows this per device. He will learn real fast how to budget his resources.

You want to plug in to the school network via Ethernet but his laptop has a broken Ethernet port. So you want to plug a router in to the network and allow him to connect wireless? Is this correct?

Why not just purchase him a usb-ethernet adaptor?

The internet outlet at the dorm is broken. And I just received word that the university is getting a new router/switch. Don’t know when it’ll be installed.

Because he’s burnt through 5% of my VZW data in 4 days. At this rate it’ll be gone before 20 days.

There again, when the Ethernet port is fixed. Hopefully he’ll jump on his computer for whatever he does. But in the mean time, idk if I can change my data to something else and still be able to go back to my grandfathered plan once the port is fixed.

Because I have the 12GB with 2GB bonus per line, takes me out to 16GB. And most months we are transferring 10 to 12GB over to the next month.

It just times like this I wish I was on the unlimited. But if I did that for a month like this. I can’t go back to the 12 with the extra 4GB, as I’ll lose those for changing plans.

I don't use that much data, my 2GB plan works fine for me at only $75 for 2 lines per month with Verizon (I usually use about 2GB per month).
That's $55 less per month than the unlimited plan (@ $130 per month for 2 lines).
Why would I go with unlimited????

I'm starting to see why/how these companies are making so much money on people that don't use WiFi, that is available most everywhere. People are just to lazy to login into WiFi and can't be bothered with it.
I just fixed a customer's crappy WiFi last month, in their home. Was there today and noticed the log showed very little use of the WiFi over this last month. All of them had their WiFi turned off on their phones and still using hotspots for their tablets *facepalm*

I wonder what Xfinity Mobile is going to do to the industry. My understanding is that for cell reception they use Verizon. But when the phone is near an Xfinity WiFi, it'll automatically switch over to that.

Will that be able to happen mid call? Both connecting and disconnecting from an Xfinity WiFi? Or will it only happen when the phone isn't in use for talk?

In terms of monthly usage, are there two accounting’s, one for cell and one for WiFi? If so, what happens if one reaches the cell limit?

Ok, if his port is not working, how would hooking up his own router save you data on your cellular plan? What are you going to plug the router in to?

The problem may be with your computer, so see a programmer first.

I would hope that he has solved the issue in the FIVE years since he posted this.

MicahWhitehead makes the mistake of the remotecentral newbie: Daniel's SEO is so incredible that when an absolutely antique comes up in front of the new member, they don't think to check the date of the last message. What would then happen is that one of us would respond, then maybe two more would, then someone would notice the entire discussion was of little value due to its age, and they'd get pissed off....

Micah, welcome to the site!

Daniel, would it be possible to allow us to permanently modify the site's search terms? I ALWAYS want to search by Posts in Descending order of date, NEVER the site's default Relevance. It might be nice to slide the time period default back a little bit from "the dawn of time," too.

Thanks.

On the topic, now, and this is relevant every day: I find it totally acceptable that the college specify what routers and other equipment may be put on the network. College IT has to keep the network working, and it can't have a hundred digital Wild Wests plugged into it!
