I'm wondering if any of you have experience with this. A "friend" of mine (it's a love hate thing) wants to record a series of issues based podcasts with me (political, social, etc....we're practically polar opposites). He's in ATL, I'm in FL. Anybody know what kind of software could be used to achieve this? Thanks in advance!

The budget way to handle it is to use Skype and their voice recorder  (can't remmeber what they call it, just Google it)  or Zencastr. I'd recommend Zencastr because the audio quality is going to be considerably better.  If the audio sux, nobody is going to listen.  Get the $20 per month package.

You'll also want to have a decent or better than decent quality microphone on each end... Personally I use the BlueSnowball it's on the cheap side.  I'm happy with it, gives me good sound quality, but I don't know if I'd trust if for a podcast..So maybe take a look at the blue yeti..

[Link: bluemic.com]  It comes with a stand but I'd recommend a mic boom like this..It attaches to your desk and hangs over your monitor.

Then you're going to have to decide on the actual podcast software you'll use.

I should also mention this....Don't know what the specific goals are for the podcast, but if he/you are going to try and get ratings for the podcast, there are a lot of things you're going to have to account for..

The most important is that the Apple Rating system is set up completely different than Google's Algorithm.  Long story short, with Apple ratings revolve around the frequency in which you put out new episodes.  Podcasts that dump new episodes at least twice a week rank higher as a general rule.

Do you have a Mac? And do you have a cable with a headphone jack on both ends?

Just plug the cable into the headphone and mic at the same time. Open QuickTime player. Select File--- New Audio Recording. Then record the Podcast on your Mac. Once completed, send the file to your "friend".

Even if you have a Windows computer, you should still be able to install Apple's Quicktime player and do the same thing. Although I am not sure if the "New Audio Recording" is available on the Windows version of QT.

Of course this process will record everything on the computer. So you if do something else that has audio in the mean time, it'll record that too.

You can turn off the audio of everything else on a PC, and probably on a Mac, too.

Whatever you do, get those microphones close to your mouth! It's tiresome and ultimately boring to listen to voices that sound like they're ten feet away in a men's room. Avoid echo in the audio by placing the mic near the mouth. At that place, the echo is much lower in volume than the voice, so you won't hear much echo. The room should also have something to absorb sound. At least a carpet and a sofa will help. Go for acoustics the opposite of a bathroom!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I'll come back to reference this post if I decide to go through with it. I've got bigger fish to fry for a while, but eventually it might be a fun thing to do and perhaps my friend will comprehend my thoughts and rationale more easily if we're having an on the spot conversation. Maybe I'll make him hate me forever. Who knows.

The ultimate goal, for him, is for there to be a dialogue that could be helpful and informative to anyone who may listen in the hopes that we can understand each other better and come to terms of agreement as opposed to crap we're seeing in the media every day, all the hate and divisiveness. I don't know how well it'll work. People will still call me a racist even though I'm far from it. You folks know how that works.

I was definitely thinking of getting a Blue mic. Quality pro-audio stuff, and their consumer grade stuff is pretty good. And yeah, 10-4 on being close to the mic. My education is in audio engineering, so I know the dos and donts of that aspect of it. One thing I will NOT do, though, is pay any kind of money per month for access to a service that is good for making podcasts. He can pay for that if he wants to do this so bad. He's a budding actor (one you wouldn't have heard of, but may have seen) and his career is going just fine so I'll let him foot the bill =)

Maybe it'll turn into a once a week thing. Maybe one day I'll be the next Rush Limbaugh lol yeah right.

Anyhoot, thanks!
