So just to clarify is the apple tv sending out 4:4:4 if your display can handle it and if it can't it will switch to 4:2:2? I'm just trying to figure out if all of the 10.2 gb/s extenders I have put in will pass 4k from this apple tv.

It will not switch automatically, it will stay at 4K SDR@60Hz ( no HDR ). Also, 4K HDR@30Hz 4:2:2 settings is not " standard " and it is listed under " Other Formats ", so you have to choose it manually.

Has anyone had any luck streaming netflix 4k to a projector? I have a client with a Sony VPL-VW365 projector. The onboard netflix from a 4k OPPO and the new Sony UPB-1000EX won't give a 4k option. Upon calling netflix they said the don't currently cover projectors which didn't make a ton of sense to me. If they have the technology and can send the signal what difference does it make what is receiving or processing the signal? The system does currently run through an Onkyo processor which is 2.0, 2.2 capable and I did try hooking the player straight to the projector with a 1m 4k cable with the same result.
One thing I have learned in this industry. It is easier to pull a wire than it is to push one.

FYI, only HDMI input 2 on the VPL-VW365 is HDCP2.2 compatible. This has thrown off our technicians a number of times.

yes Thank you I was aware of that. Currently the system will play 4k Blurays and HDR content fine. It's just the netflix service not giving the option. When I log a customers info into a Sony 4k TV it gives me a pop up asking if the customer would be interested in upgrading to a 4k account. I have not seen this option for a projector yet and even if I go into the account and manually update it online it still doesn't offer the 4k content for playback.

Do those disc players support 4K output from streaming apps, or just off of the disc in the tray?

rbhfan,
There is no way for Netflix to know if it is streaming to a projector, or streaming to a TV. That is ridiculous. There is something else going on there.

You said you upgraded the customer's service to 4K, are you sure? Because currently Netflix has 3 levels:
$7.99 per month - 1 screen and SD.
$9.99 per month - 2 screens and HD video.
$11.99 per month - 4 screens and 4K video.

The only other thing that could cause 4K to fail to work like you are describing, is if the proper EDID is not getting done between devices. Check your setting again and use a test TV also.

Oh also, obviously not everything is available in 4K on Netflix either. Make sure you are selecting a title that is available in 4K.

So as far as control goes, has anyone found any strangeness with regards to IR commands?

Or can you just swap it for the Apple TV 4 and you're good to go control-wise?

There are some issues with IR commands with the ATV4K. I know I was having some issues, that were not consistent, with double commands being sent. I was told that Apple changed the delay threshold. There were some adjustments that needed to be made. I am a Savant dealer so Savant made a new profile and it has been working fine since then.
