I will be installing a 43" Sunbrite TV in a few days. It will be located against the house inside of a new screened in porch. I was called in after the electrical and coax were already installed by the electrician. The customer insists on using his existing Comcast DVR from their bedroom for the outdoor set. He wants it mounted behind the TV. I have no problem with this, but I am concerned about condensation, not rain, damaging the DVR. Should I be concerned? If so, is there an enclosure available to protect the DVR? We have all 4 seasons here...extreme hot and cold and humidity. I MIGHT be able to convince the customer to let me install the DVR inside the home, but that will be in their family room....and in a very visible location. Thanks!

It's a rented box from the provider. I wouldn't be too concerned with it. Have the customer sign off on it and you're good.

Those boxes run hot enough that I don't think that you will have any condensation issues, but that's not a great environment for a hard drive.

Actually, this will be a full sized DVR....at least 4 years old. My instincts tell me it will probably be okay, but I was hoping someone could tell me they have done this before...and what problems it caused, if any.

Well, I have had a cable box that was installed outside fail after 5 years in the humidity. When the customer tried to turn it back in - because it was so corroded & nasty - they charged them $300-$400 for the box (can't remember the exact price). Someone has to pay for the destroyed box eventually. Whether the cable company eats it or they charge the customer for it, is anyone's guess.
I would let the customer know, since it is not their box and is on lease from the cable company, if/when it fails they may have to pay for it.

At four years old, assume the hard drive is about to fail.
Why is it necessary to move the main box out of the bedroom?
In the current X1 systems, there is one large box with smaller "slave" boxes at other locations. One has a little better control at the large box, but most users don't notice the difference.
When the current box fails, you may have some difficulty avoiding X1. Also, if that old bedroom TV has only component video inputs, you'll be digging around for little black boxes that arrive without any manufacturer's markings. In some cases you may be able to replace an older box with one that has component outputs, but it is the luck of the draw.
