It's a little easier to write instructions that "pair" a printer with a wireless something -- even if there is no WiFi. And, you don't need to deal with pesky little geek acronyms such as "WEP", "WPA", "WPA2", "SSID", "DHCP", "Guest", and on and on.

buzz,
you may have inadvertently pointed toward another problem with printers that have their own wifi, if you really meant "pair."

When you pair one device with another, a third device can't get in there. I pair my HP printer with my laptop, my gf is only going to have problems trying to use the same printer.

Of course, maybe these printers don't actually "pair." I don't know.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

also it may have never been set up. I have a customer that I installed a TV for that had a trunk slammer, friend of a friend, do his thermostats and doorbells. when I went to connect his TV to his Wi-Fi there were 4 aprilaire thermostats and 2 skybells broadcasting ssids but thats onky so you can connect directly to them to enter in the correct Wi-Fi info. I pointed this out and programmed them all correctly and he was so impressed his apps now worked.
One thing I have learned in this industry. It is easier to pull a wire than it is to push one.

This means no iPads or phones using your wifi. That's not practical.

The HP comments have explained why my HP has two printer names: one is through the router's wifi and the other is direct to the printer. I haven't done a survey as to whether they both drop wifi, or just one is the usual culprit.

Can someone offer an actual good explanation for a printer not to use the router's wifi?

Don't dissect every word and comment- there's no reason to think hand-held devices would be part of the 'everything' I referred to.

As for two names, one is the friendly name for WiFi and the other is for connecting peer to peer or WPS.

Ah. Don't think when I write 'everything' that I mean 'everything.'

Don't pretend that you're not intelligent enough to understand what he meant...unless you're not pretending....

ALWAYS disable the wifi direct. Just like most new TVs, they will put out there own SSID to connect directly to. Always disable that

Always use brother LED Laser printing products if your name is even somewhat associated with the job. Always try your hardest to get a wire to it.
I love supporting product that supports me!

Turn off WiFi direct. Just used if you had no WiFi in house to print direct to printer. Also, with HP, I have found the need to creator a separate SSID with only the printer, on house WiFi to ensure consistent connection to printer.
