We were just shopping and ran across the iHome ih-cm 306b cell phone mount for the car.
There are three tabs that go into the CD slot. You push down on the middle one, push all three tabs into the CD slot, and let go of the center tab. It springs back up, and the mount stays in place... pushing upward and downward on the CD slot from inside.

Is this as bad an idea as it sounds like it is?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I've seen a similar contraption that latches on to an air conditioning grill. It seemed like a bad idea to me, but it's been in use for a couple years and nothing bad has happened. It does keep the phone at arms reach and the GPS is able to function.

The CD player has the clamp in the center and it can't be forced to go past the metal shell, so I doubt it will damage it and the pickup's lens is below the level of the tray, so I doubt that would be scratched. I don't think yanking it out would do anything to damage it, unless it was shifted violently to the side.

They probably figured nobody uses CDs in the car anymore so if it damages the player, no one will be the wiser ;-)

If the CD player has a door and a tray that slides out, it may be possible to damage the door and tray. If it's a more modern unit where only the disc slides out, damage is unlikely unless the phone holder's fingers reach far enough back to engage the rollers. The optics will be centered on the disc hub and usually slide side to side. I doubt that the phone contraption will reach back far enough to risk damaging the optics.

I don't play CD's in the car. I bought the car used and never tested the CD player. There a jukebox in the trunk that annoys me and at some point I'll remove it.

This thing really does depend on people not playing CDs all the time, in fact never. It only surprises me because it looks like it might break something. But, yeah, I guess that hardly matters any more.

I hear you. I bought a 2017, and ordered the entertainment package, so I can listen to Howard stern in the morning (yes it's a waste I don't drive out of town and my commute is 9 minutes on a bad day). It's got a 7" screen. I didn't even realize til about 3 months of ownership that there was a tiny button that flipped down the screen to load a cd or dvd. So I immediately went back in, grabbed a DVD...put the car in drive...big warning has to be in park. Do people really sit in a parked car and watch a movie?

Is there a rear screen for the back seat? My mother's car does the same thing, but allows the passengers in the back to watch a second screen while the front screen is just for control.

Back in the day when practically every home DVD player had a region encoded. I used my in car DVD player to watch those “over seas” movies. The most bazar movie that I had to watch it like that, was a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie from the 80’s. For whatever reason, I couldn’t find a region 1 DVD of Bloodsport or whatever. I do remember watching it as a child here in the States though.

Unfortunately, they need to use that as a way to keep people from watching movies while they drive.

Nope just the front. The back seat is just there to keep insurance premiums lower, I doubt a midget could sit back there and make out err watch a movie.

I find it kind of scary that all of the aftermarket head units can have a device connected so you CAN watch a movie while driving.

Who does that?
