From the article, "Unusually, she says she never supplied or was given a contract.

"I had unlimited time and unlimited budget....They said, 'If you ask for more, we'll give you more."

And "The renovation project grew with "delirious demands" from Pitt and more and more designers getting involved, Soudant said. She hired new staff and relegated her company's other projects to bottom priority.

She says she had 17 employees working exclusively on the lighting for Miraval at one point.

After 3 ½ years of work, the chateau stopped paying Soudant for her services, she said. Her staff continued working on the project, she says, and her bills started piling up, notably for government payroll charges."

What did she expect? No contract? Told she had unlimited time and budget? And she proceeded? Well, THAT'S her problem!

Reminds me of a line from Animal House, when Flounder saw the damage to his brother's Lincoln Continental and Otter says "You can't go through life blaming others. Hey, you f&cked up! You trusted us!".
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

If the payments stop, the work stops.

If the payments don't start, I don't start. I'm not going out of pocket for anyone I haven't worked with and even then, it's not going to be for anything but cable that I already have and I don't stock much cable.

Kind of a no-brainer. The issue is she was getting paid then stopped getting paid. She should have stopped working right away. I don't care who the clients are, no money = no work.

Not having a written contract for this size of a job was the first and biggest mistake of all.

Well, y'all seem to skip over that it's all in France. They are strange anyway. Maybe Brad got pissed nothing was getting finished during the 30 hr work week.

One thing that stuck out, Brad's attorneys are saying the ideas were all his anyway. How many times have we all encountered a client that said that about at least one sub on a project (usually the decorator).

Money stops does not mean works stops in California.
You can be sued and lose, if you stop work when they stop paying.
I've been there.
Large department store when bk and I had to complete the work, with no payments.

Just another reason I don't live there.

Well, 3 of them were strictly in charge of wine and cheese for lunch.
