I have a customer with a theater that recently (this year) started showing this message, and the screen flashes the message, when the theater is turned on.

Theater consists of Yamaha RX-A3030, DTV HR23, Apple TV, an Ethereal HDBaseT extender, and a Sim2 D80.

To make the problem more irritating, it doesn't always happen. And sometimes switching sources and going back to DTV fixes the problem. I've not seen the problem happen on ATV. And sometimes if I power the theater down, wait for the projector to cool down and turn it back on, it works fine.

Firmware is up to date on the Yamaha. I've tried everything Brent has suggested, except tell the customer buy a new projector. I tried an SDI extender, but the only coax run to the projector was that 25awg mini coax with the stranded core. I don't know if my termination was high enough quality to work. It checked good when I tested the wire, but I don't know if it really was. I called sim2, and they were the usual help of "that is a very reliable projector" (every projector I've sent to them happens to always return NPF, $500 bill for bulb and new firmware). Sim2 even hinted at the Yamaha could be the problem instead of the projector.

I don't want to tell the customer buy a new projector and the problem still not be solved.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I tried switching DTV back to component and calling it done, but the picture had lines in it, similar to a ground loop, but a lot more lines and they didn't move.

Time for a new DTV box.

This disease is spreading!
This is not an HDCP issue, instead it is a current threshold firmware update issue (I think).
Here is how HDMI works:
The sink side of the chain (in this case the AVR) supplies voltage and current to the output of the source (DirecTV). Usually this works just fine, however recently we are starting to see this HDCP issue crop up (it hit my in February on my LA job site), lucky for me I was able to diagnose and overcome this issue (I think).
Here are my thoughts:
IMO a recent (and spreading) DirecTV update has raised the threshold requirements for the current supplied over the TMDS feeds.
Here are possible solutions:
Change HDMI cable connected to the DirecTV to a short fat "old school" type.
Place our HDM-AIO inline on the output of the DirecTV unit (not the least expensive option).

I have run into this on a few jobs. After discussing with Brent, have changed HDMI to Ethereal MHX per his recommendation and it has taken care of the issues.

I've tried the short fat cable. I think it was one of the ethereal with the braided jacket.

Brent, what's the AIO retail?

The lines in the picture. Purple and green? If so, bad box. I have seen many HR20-23 go bad with those symptoms. Band -aided a few by using HDMI, but eventually, it will fail completely. Might not be the cause or solution to your problem, but I would replace the box regardless.

Brent said you can call him tomorrow. Do it.

No, the lines in the picture were just lighter sections of the picture. They looked very similar to how a the lines from a ground loop look as far as color, but were stationary and had a lot more of them.

OK, this is different.
This sounds more like an HDMI board failure, possibility due to heat.
Still call me this morning when possible.

The lines were only when I tried switching the DTV back to component. The lines aren't present on hdmi.

It's helpful, when clarifying a problem description, not to just add the latest detail, but to redo the entire description from the start.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Brent, I haven't called you yet because this issue kind of got pushed to the back burner.

But I was back on site today and found new information. When I turn on the system and DTV displays the previously mentioned message and the screen blinks in and out, if I switch to ATV, the ATV blinks out and back about every two seconds (the blinking out and back on is not as fast of a rate as the DTV). So now it looks like the problem is more on the projector or AVR than the DTV receiver.

I turned the system off, waited for the projector to cool down, then turned it back on, and it worked fine. No more blinking

Just a note:
Sim2 saying ANY of their projectors are 'reliable' is like listening to the prostitute tell you she is a virgin. Bunch of Bull S%^*!
Sim2 made some really nice performing projectors. But reliable they ain't! Much like many Italian things for some reason.

A nice $139, 22", 1080p, LG test TV would come in handy for this :)
