This is just so amazing...had a long conversation with Portal last week about using their service and was amazed that they e-mail the purchase orders into vendors, so I really would not know what warehouse a product was coming from to give accurate scheduling detail. The Portal guys relayed to me that that the vast majority of orders are e-mail rather than through vendor portals and there is still a significant number of dealers using faxed orders or calling the rep firm.

Nice technology industry we are in....

Remember there are still a huge amount of A/V guys out there that hate that network stuff. I am still blown away when I get e-mails from AOL accounts...

The bicycle industry has WAY better web based ordering systems. The major brands and the major distributors have dealer sites with real time warehouse inventory (none of this "call for details" BS), back order maintenance, future dating (when next order is due to hit) plus order hold for future date.... and all invoices can be viewed, paid, cross-referenced for shipping... and this was starting 10 years ago! I'm always amazed how a technology "industry" can be so anti- technology...

Not only that, but, AOL accounts that are still being paid $24.99/mo! From what I can surmise, There's no way ernie is NOT currently paying for one of these accounts.
He prob emails them about support for Apple's TV's...
how in the hell does ernie make money?

And after talking to people around the industry over the last few weeks I am convinced that this is not a problem with our vendors....it is a problem with US. Still way too many really "old school" integrators out there.
Jack Rainey - Full disclosure...reformed integrator, now mid-Atlantic manufacturers rep for: Integra, Paradigm, Anthem, Parasound, Atlona, LG TV's and Metra Home Theater...among others

Agreed! You put people in the equation, and things can go wrong more often than not. However, I hate creating POs in our system, then having to duplicate the work on a web portal.

Its best when I can just click email and the PO goes off to the company to execute. As long as my PO is correct, they can't blame errors on us. Now if we could just get some type of EDI between D-Tools or QB and the vendors, we could eliminate one more human link in the processes.

I like the people that trust us to create a design, execute it without a lot of micromanagement and pay their bill on time.
