Is it normal to have to ask for raises? I would think that company owners would give you raises based on performance/time on the job. If i had to ask for a raise i think i would just sit down with the boss and say "i need a raise". Include the amount you want per hour and any perks you want like vacation days or bonuses. I would probably have a backup plan for if they say no so that i could put in 2 weeks notice.

In my experience depends on how well structured and competent management & ownership are. I've seen small and large shops that would happily let you grind away for decades at the same rate if you don't ask, and asking is no guarantee. Of course, there are lots of employee's who clock in and out and never do anything to earn a raise, but expect one simply for length of tenure.

The well run shops do quarterly or bi-annual employee reviews and have clearly stated progressions for employees to work towards.

Anyhoot, I checked my email this morning to find out that he already had a new position to offer me with increased responsibilities. He got me a company iPhone over a month ago, but he hasn't had time to finalize things for my position because his mother passed away two weeks ago. I had built myself up and was literally about to start typing within minutes when I got a text from him with that news. Obviously I couldn't say "sorry bout your mom, can I have a raise?". Needless to say a bit of weight has now been lifted off of my chest.

That is fantastic. You still should be proud that you’ve took the time to type out an email and sent it off. Sure, an in person would’ve been great and a phone call would’ve been better than the email. But for someone who has never asked for a raise. It must feel great to receive that email stating that he wants to give you a different position in the company. Granted he’s been dragging his feet in doing it. But it’s a total understanding situation there.

I have not read the updated post, but... you could’ve highlighted the entire post in the edit and press delete. A simple word of “delete” would’ve worked.

Well I deleted 90% of it. I get it and the thought crossed my mind as to reasons why I should and I understand them all. Nobody knows I come to this forum and nobody I work with seems like the type to come here. 'meh. What can I say, I was a little anxious. I think we've all been there at one point or another. From an outside perspective, I would give myself the same advice.

I went back and read the edit. That’s perfectly fine.

With my current job. I literally have to stop and think before I say anything. Other wise I could go to jail for espionage. As I work on classified stuff for military use.

There is so much I want to say, but cannot. Sure talking about my conworkers isn’t a federal offense. But to tell a story, I would have to explain this or that. Don’t want to take the chance. Ha.

Should always start with getting feedback from the employer about how they feel about your performance and job responsibilities. Its best to know who THEY feel so you can decide which path you want to further take to get to your end point.

Sage advice, friend, that I will heed in the future. I was just so nervous and desperate at the time...in the future, though, I'll be feeling it out more. The company I work for is growing, and there's the potential for a pretty nice future if I stay with them.

As it turns out, what I was offered (and accepted) is far beyond what I had hoped for. I'll be getting more than a raise and a phone. It's actually a pretty sizeable investment in me. There will be a lot of learning involved, but that's cool with me because that's one of my favorite things to do. I always want to increase my value/worth as a worker/employee/boss/person.

Thanks, folks. Y'all have been and hopefully will continue to be a part of my growth.
