Just asked for a raise for the first time in my life. (Before this, I had been in bars for a long time) After 2 1/2 years of making the same amount of money whilst busting my butt and doing a higher quality job than many of the other guys, I had no choice. I'm a bit nervous.

I wish you luck man. I too have never asked for a raise. Currently at my job for less than 2 months though. However, I am making more than someone who has been there for 10. Probably because of my background.

If I may, how did you work yourself up to ask? Did you have a plan of what to say, how to say it and such?

I definitely had a bit of a plan of what to say. Lots of things got omitted, of course, because I know that writing a novel of a raise request would be annoying to even me if I were a boss, and I'm a pretty chill and understanding guy.

I worked myself up to ask, though, via stuff.

Sounds like your company needs an overhaul in the defined roles and authority department. That's going to be an uphill battle when the high and mighty's are already ensconced. Best of luck with the pay raise request.

Your post is one of a few that I actually read. Because you needed to get something off of your chest and I read it.

I understand the frustration of the authority complex of your co worker. And I’m sure that the salary pay has gotten to his head. Which is probably where it’s coming from.

I see that there’s someone on her looking for a tech in Miami, FL... just saying.

Is it normal to have to ask for raises? I would think that company owners would give you raises based on performance/time on the job. If i had to ask for a raise i think i would just sit down with the boss and say "i need a raise". Include the amount you want per hour and any perks you want like vacation days or bonuses. I would probably have a backup plan for if they say no so that i could put in 2 weeks notice.

The part about coworkers texting about you or someone talking down to you...you have two choices.

#1. Call them out on it immediately when it happens. It's like 5th grade when you get picked on. Say something like "shut your mouth or i will shut it for you". Maybe say something rude about their wife or mom. Something that will cause them to shut up and leave you alone forever...or immediately start a fight. Bottom line is that you gotta deal with it all at once.

#2. Ignore it because you are a grown up who doesn't have time for middle school girl behavior.

Disclaimer: Option 1 will most likely get you fired and possibly arrested and maybe killed. But if you prepare properly you can take the other guy with you.

Good luck.

I'm really glad you didn't write "a novel of a raise request" that "would be annoying to even me if I were a boss." You got that part covered with us in Post 3!

Seriously, I hope you worked through that pile of crap you threw at us before writing (if I understood correctly) to your boss. In fact, I think you should have instead asked for some time to talk with your boss. Sure, giving something in writing is less nerve-racking than being face to face with your future, but it should impress a boss to be talked with instead of written at.

I wish you luck.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

That "pile of crap" was basically just me getting things off my chest (thanks KoT) to people who might understand. I would have liked to had a sit down with my boss as well, but, the company is based in Dothan and I'm in SRB, FL. Driving two hours for a meeting just wouldn't work for either of us.

Anyhoot, I checked my email this morning to find out that he already had a new position to offer me with increased responsibilities. He got me a company iPhone over a month ago, but he hasn't had time to finalize things for my position because his mother passed away two weeks ago. I had built myself up and was literally about to start typing within minutes when I got a text from him with that news. Obviously I couldn't say "sorry bout your mom, can I have a raise?". Needless to say a bit of weight has now been lifted off of my chest.

You sure he didn't see this forum and your posts and knows it's you?
Timing seemed awfully suspect to me.

There are private forums that would be more appropriate for this type of discussion. Regardless, hope it all works out for you.

For me, I prefer (both as an employee or an owner) to have a face to face about these types of situations. At minimum, a phone conversation. Should always start with getting feedback from the employer about how they feel about your performance and job responsibilities. Its best to know who THEY feel so you can decide which path you want to further take to get to your end point.
