Ok, I just bought a new dell and I want to give my old computer to my kids. I'm going to make a wireless network form my cable internet. It is a 100.0 Mbps connection. What is the best router for me and what other parts do I need besides the reciever card?
Your help would be appreciated.
What you should choose does not end in the here and now, but how much you want to deal with it in the futre

first if you cable internet is 100 mbps where do you live cuz im movin there!!!!!

how far away is the remote computer from the main one. you are better off keeping anything you can hard wired. most wireless routers give you 4 hardwired ports.. but its hard to recomend anything with the info you have given. netgear makes good gear at a reasonable price. i would put the router and modem near your computer and hardwire it and get a wirless card for the kids...anything that is rated IEEE 802.11g

here you go 29.99 after rebate

the thing about the 100.0mbps thing is with the little internet connection icon in the taskbar or tool bar thing down on the bottom of the screen, I put the mouse over it and it says Speed: 100.0 Mbps and right now I don't have a wireless router, just a modem. Ok, I just tested my connection speed and it's about 2.2 mbps. Faster than a full T1 connection. Sorry for the inconvinience. But what would be the best router for me?

Don't forget to change the password on the router as well. It is kinda fun to tap into someone else's network when they don't have it secured up. Wired is still more secure than wireless.

I just bought a D-LINK WIRELESS CABLE/DSL ROUTER MFG#: DI-784, it does 802.11 A, B , & G. This piece was recommended to me by the guy who designed Microsofts wireless interface, Scott Manchester.

I should have it any day so I will report back waht I find, it was about $100.00. You will obviously need wireless nics for each computer, try to get a minimium of 802.11 G like Vincent suggests.

Good luck,

Stumpy, that refers to the ethernet connection between your computer's network card and the router. Two computers connected at this speed will exchange data quite fast; the slowest link is the limiter.

However, the data transfer rate between the router and the rest of the world is limited by the DSL or cable connection, which rarely exceeds 1.5mbps; usually lower for DSL, and varies greatly for cable.
