Another good answer to being shopped...

"Do you want us to still be in business when your need a service call?".

If a company doesn't make a profit, it cannot stay in business. Look around at all the companies that went under in the last 10 years. This one fact IS a fact. So many shops weren't really making a profit, so when things slowed down, they went under, leaving clients stuck.

This was a HUGE one back in the housing boom when so many dealers were wiring homes for free.

Back then I was talking to a lot of those builders and I kept asking: Do you ever wonder about the business skills of a contractor who would do this? Does it occur to you they won't be around to finish the job? [And they weren't]

In that era I had lots of contractors come to me and attempt to goad me into pre wiring for free. They'd want me to take on a whole tract of houses. The deal was that they'd give my name to the home owner in the end. I should be thankful for the offer.

I also had restaurant owners come in and ask me to outfit their facility for free and they'd give me lots of "free" publicity. Fat chance. Most of these guys never got to the point of opening their doors. One guy wanted a B&O system in his restaurant (for free, of course). Sure, that would be a glorious system -- fit for purpose. That restaurant never opened. I guess he couldn't find enough kitchen appliance suppliers to donate equipment.

Don't forget: They gave you the (required) opportunity to equip their model home for free so customers would be enticed to buy your stuff.

Sooooo many dealers did this.

Actually, the real estate agents didn't want all of that "complicated" stuff cluttering the place.

Keep a roll of TP in the truck and always check the supply in the space shuttle before committing. :)

Regarding Lighting control...

"Do yourself a favor and just sell Lutron"

Exactly. Most of us got that advice 2-3 years too late....
Don't read my answer. Someone else will go into great detail as to why I am wrong rather than answer the original question...
