I know, I know...

I have an client that bought a bunch of equipment from BB years ago, including Logitech Harmony 900 and 650 remotes and blasters on two different systems. I just completed display and AVR upgrades/replacements and they're now asking me to update the remotes to make them work again [they'd not been using them for years because they switched TV service providers, which "broke" the remotes].

I haven't messed around with Logitech in years, but [reluctantly] agreed to look into it. Upon downloading the software, I didn't see an obvious way to capture what's already in the remote and didn't want to go too far into the process with the remote USB connected and risk losing the programming altogether before appealing to you'ins.

Is it possible to extract the programming from the remote? If so, how?

TIA

Yes. I think you either create a new account or use the forgot password link. It will tell you to plug in the remote and it will "recover" the configuration. I did it recently for a guy who replaced his 650 and did not want to have best buy do it again.

You can also call Harmony's Tech Support and have them clone the account if the user doesn't have the log in ID. Best Buy uses a string of number followed by the customer's [email protected] as the sign-in and it may show up as soon as you plug it in, but you'll need Harmony to create a new account with a password you can use. Because the log in probably doesn't use the customer's e-mail address in the account, it's unlikely that clicking 'Forgot Password' will result in seeing an e-mail message.

I would download the new software and get access to the dealer portal- that allows more control of and access to accounts, as well as keeping all of them in one place.

You probably already know this but you have to use the legacy version of the software:

[Link: setup.myharmony.com]

On the opening screen, click "forgot password"

As long as you can answer a couple "security questions" like the brand of the TV or the name of the person, you can then see the programming, edit it, and re-download to the remote.

I have no idea why you would need a friggen password with security questions for a damn remote.

The USB driver operation is always sketchy for me on those older models. Sometimes I have to reboot my computer and connect/reconnect a few times or try a different USB jack to get the remote to connect.

Why need a password and user name? probably because signing up requires user info that could be seen as 'sensitive' and used against the owner of the remote. In the new dealer software, they require permission from the user if the setup is being changed off-site since the setup is stored in the cloud. I asked- they told me it was privacy concerns.

WRT the USB- it can be the cable, too- I had a short cable that worked sometimes, but not others and it wasn't the original that came with the remote. I started using it because, for some reason, I couldn't find any of the extra cables I KNEW I had.

No luck thus far...The software for the 900 doesn't ever ask me to recover programming when I connect it...It just starts walking me through a new setup.

I tried calling Logitech Support, but they'll only speak to you for free if the remote is within its 90 day support warranty...

After unplugging the remote USB, I decided to start walking through the setup of a new remote, but got stuck on the codes for the LG OLED, which do not appear to exist in Logitech's database. The discretes, of course, do not exist on the LG remote [which I also do not have].

So...I signed up for a dealer account to see if that might grant me access to some support. What disty's do you guys purchase from? None of my normal carry Logitech.

TIA

That's strange - done it many times over the years. Does it initially give you the "forgot password" option?

It does, but I had created a new user account. I anticipated that the software would detect an existing config file when I connected the remote...Not so?

Where are you located? ADI, Allnet/Tandem, Skywalker, A&M and others carry Harmony.

It may detect it, but you can manually get into it- when the software opens, you should have a black bar at the top with 'Customer Accounts' to the left. Click on New Account and create it, using the customer's name, etc. I don't use the actual e-mail address because I don't want them to be barraged by messages, so I may use their name or [email protected]

Once the account has been created, look at the upper right- it has 'Request Access' and it will ask if you have the remote. Click Yes and you should be on your way.

Not so! The software doesnt pull the programming from the remote. The software references programming held on Logitechs servers, which is linked to the original username/password that was created when the remote was first programmed. The serial number (or whatever unique identifier Logitech uses for the remote) is also tied to that programming. Thats why you gotta use lost password. Once you answer the two "security questions", it looks at the serial number on the remote and retrieves the programming file from Logitechs servers, not the remote itself.

Never used HighFi's solution - maybe that works just as well
