He should know that "price range" and "true antiques" are opposing properties. Surely a lot less money could have been spent already if he had only yielded to having all modern equipment.

Sounds like the conversation is over then. Doesn't want an OTA tuner at the rack. Doesn't want to spend the money on an extender that supports ARC. Enjoy those TV speakers when you're watching the local news and Antique Roadshow.

Long shot, but: If the only sources are OTA from the TV and an Apple TV at the AVR, you can relocate the Apple TV to behind the TV. Then, you don't need HDMI between the receiver and TV, so that frees up a category cable for return audio.
If it's not simple, it's not sufficiently advanced.
