I have a small job for clients that are the nices people in the world. It's right Near me.

They bought there own TV and tivo in the family rm. I set it up.

They asked to hang a TV and set up a mini in there Mbr. The Tivo would fail in bridge mode. So I called tech support and got an oversees guy that knew nothing. Call back the same thing he told me to connect the coax cable after 30 mins.

Called my rep. Tivo higher up called me and swapped out the broken TiVo in a 5 min call. I was really mad but for a higher up to make it right shows they will do the right thing

Funny.

I installed a few last year and have been insanely problematic and a service call frenzy. NEVER AGAIN.

I've only ever installed a couple but they have never been a problem. That said, I mostly agree their time is gone. They screwed up trying to compete with "free" equipment from the service providers instead of licensing their technology to the hardware manufacturers and service providers.

I have rarely had one work without some problem. Cable card issues, hard drive failures, excess fan noise, constant lock ups, etc, etc. These problems have been around at least since 2008 and we have stayed away for at least 2 or 3 years now. To hear you have had issues recently doesn't surprise me. I prefer to sell/install equipment where I won't have 100% of homeowners pissed....

I disagree with this. Being able to record OTA is huge IMO and that coupled with streaming services is all you need nowadays. I would never again use their service coupled with Comcrap but when the customer wants to "cut the cord" I think Tivo's are a great option. Of course, if they worked reliably.

The skinny bundles are upon us (you tube, sling, DTV now, vue etc) and will kill off the good-idea-but-poorly-executing players within the next couple years, Tivo included.

You Tube TV should do this almost on its own. If I had an easier path for an attic antenna, I would probably already have it myself. The big networks, national and local sports, unlimited dvr -all for $35 a month, nearly a no-brainer...

Nice!!
TiVo steps up for us all the time.

They give us a LOT of support, and because of that we can support our dealers in ways that exceed many of our other vendors.

I was recently able to swap a bad unit for a dealer, and it wasn't even purchased from us! In fact, they got an ADVANCED REPLACEMENT on that unit.

Just about any other vendor would not have even called back, and probably just replied with an email to send along on where the dealer could send the thing in for service.

TiVo's Roamio OTA is selling faster than we can get them in because of that trend.

It has the same TiVo user interface, the same ability to aggregate the search results across numerous terrestrial, or subscription based sources, the same control/integration capabilities, the same abilities to distribute via Moca or IP with the Minis.

Except no monthly fees.

You mean, other than the fee for Tivo's service, right? :-)

I've been using Tivos with off-air antennas at home for 7 or 8 years now. A couple of dealers I work for install Tivos with almost every job, and I've never heard any complaints about them.

Right, aren't you paying $15 a month or so for Tivo? Plus Netflix, Hulu or whomever?

The you tube thing is any device, up to 6. You could have 6 smart TVs and be done.

I'm just saying $35/ month with what they offer is a pretty good happy medium between nothing and cable for $100/month plus boxes...

The RoamioOTA model is now exclusively sold with the lifetime service, so there is no monthly or annual fee for TiVo.

For...400 bucks. Ok, but can you confirm this: on their other boxes, if you prepay for the lifetime plan and the box dies (in or out of warranty)...you have to buy another plan, it does not transfer. I call that a shady scam that they don't make clear at time of purchase. Does the same hold true for this box? Because that's the whole reason I dumped TiVo a few years back and refused to ever sell another one.

The cord cutting crowd did not want the recurring fee.
Trust me that is has been a much easier sale at $399 with no fee ever than it was at $149 for the hardware + $149 year.

I don't know about the 'if it dies' part, especially under the warranty.

I know you cannot transfer a lifetime subscription from an older series to a newer series. IE: one of my good dealers has a lifetime on a functional older TiVo XL or Premier, and was told he could not transfer his lifetime sub when upgrading to a Bolt and Minis

My advice is to never buy lifetime on TiVo.

Coach the clients to go with the annual renewal option, which saves them the equivalent of 2 monthly payments each year.

$549.99 = AIP (lifetime)
$149.99 = Annual
$ 14.99 = Monthly

I disagree Rick, respectfully of course. :)

It is about a 3.5 year break even on the lifetime vs. annual. You can opt for the extended warranty (what I did on my Bolt), and if the box craps out within that warranty, the service will transfer to a new box if they replace it. No-brainer for $35-40 or whatever it cost.

And you CAN transfer lifetime service from an older box to a newer one. I say this because I just did that. They ran a promo, so it was a one time offer, and may not ever be offered again. But I know a lot of people took them up on it because it took them forever to ship mine, and the 1TB models were gone. They charged me $99 to transfer lifetime from a TivoHD I bought ~10 years ago to the new Bolt.

Back in those days, I paid $299 for a 3 year plan, at the end of the 3 years, they offered lifetime for $99. So to date, I have had 2 Tivo boxes, and have paid $497 for lifetime service essentially. ~$1000 for 10+ years of Tivo? Not bad if you ask me.

I agree that YouTube TV is looking good on paper. Who knows when it will be launched in my area in podunkville. At least that should give them time to iron out the bugs. I remember trying Sling when it launched and it was laughable.
