My paternal GF came to the US in 1889 and told the kids- "This is America- we speak English". Unless they didn't want the kids to know what they were talking about, and they spoke German. I doubt that worked for long, though- most of the neighborhood and included other immigrants, so translation was easy enough.

The "Americans" were british subjects in a british colony. The ungrateful lot didn't want to pay their fair share so they began their terrorism.

Well since my family participated in the revolutionary war and came from Ireland probably as a servant of the British i speak English. But when i leave my front door i realize we are a nation of 300 plus million all from different countries so i dont get my panties in a twist when a different language is spoken...especially Spanish.

it is just courteous to learn the native, official, or predominant language when visiting another country. Any family of mine who has traveled abroad has studied the language and at least learned some basic phrases. As have my clients when they travel. It is not uncommon to see language books laying around their houses. I dont know how anyone could defend not learning the language of where you have chosen to live. it doesnt make sense. it is not even safe!

Wow, so way off on the history of taxes in the colonies. The colonies begged for the crown to get involved in the French-Indian war. After the war, the crown taxed the colonies to pay for the war the colonists asked for. At the time, people in the colonies were paying a lower tax rate then the English subjects. The spoiled colonists whined about them, and King George's overreaction to the whining and protests are what led to war.
