Client has a Genie and a wireless client. I am running coax to convert the client to a hardwired client. What size SWM switch do I need? Does the genie take 5 ports?

Genie takes 5 SWM tuners and can support 3 Genie minis (clients, count as 0 tuners, they use the main Genie's tuners) wired or wireless combined.

Just to clarify...The genie is 5 tuners on one cable connection. So in your case you need 2 ports, one for the genie and one for the client. A SWM dish and a 2-way splitter will get the job done. Or a regular dish, SWM16 switch, and 2-way splitter will also get the job done.

Thanks. Our directv dealer is either a moron or just wanted to gouge an extra $20 for a SWM8. He said it needed a physical port for each tuner then one for the client.

Well.. if you have a regular LNB you would use a SWM-8 but you would only have two things plugged into it.. or you can use an LNB with the SWM built in in which case you would use a splitter and a power inserter.

A SWiM 16 has 2 outputs. No splitter is required unless no home run to SWiM.

Be careful on the HR54, on the back it says SWM7. Even though right now it has 5 tuners.

Yes, good point. Allow for giving it 7. The extra 2 are supposedly for bonded 4K transponders.

Did you mean replace the wireless client with a wired client? The wireless (C41W, at least -- you gave no model number) client has no cable connection. You can't convert it to wired.

He might not have said receiver. If you're not really aware of the situation, you might hear "tuner" and understand "receiver." Or he screwed up. If he's gouging you, he's an idiot for settling on gouging you out of only the profit on a splitter! (Better proofread your invoices!)

The system needs a physical port for each receiver; receivers have one tuner, DVRs have two tuners, Genies have five tuners. If you're using wireless clients, one port is needed for the Wireless Video Bridge, which can feed up to three clients. The video bridge and client tuner count is zero.

So, count ports for wired chassis. Count tuners based on which devices you're using.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

He said tuners Ernie. He specifically said the genie is 5 tuners then with the client it needs 6 ports on the splitter.

Maybe he's an idiot. IIRC, there's only one F connector on the Genie!

But if you remember how DVRs before the genie worked, even if they only needed one coax, you had to have a physical port on the splitter for both tuners. One just got capped off.

But yes, he is an idiot. But he's the best directv guy I've found. He's solved many problems that the regular ones can't. Hes an idiot savant.
